Valid question though i suppose, never thought about it myself but to a newcomer it might be a bit strange.
As Daz says, no money is charged for the machines/emulator. but there is a voluntary donation scheme to keep the site running if you do feel the need

You may pay money by donating to the site. There is a link on the left hand side of the page 
Not every pet in Pet Society is sweet and innocent....
