You can easily rip the sounds, they are actually in WAV format! You need a file ripper, or a hex editor. They're in the real output format of 21484Hz.

You might want to upsample them in Cool Edit or something before converting; don't use Sound Recorder or other 'cheap' similar programs as they normally just change the pitch, or do simple half/double the speed.

The music is done using the MIDI format, but with a custom SoundFont. The best way to rip these is to right click on the game window and record an AVI file inside the sound test mode, then rip the music from the AVI with something like Cool Edit (again). For some reason, it's 21480Hz when recorded (bug?). WINTUNExx is the normal music, SPECIAL_x is the jingle, MARCHx is the coins coming out music, COLLECT is the cash-out piano music.

If you want the direct MIDI files it's easy to rip those, but the samples will be different when you play it back on your PC or phone and require converting in some obscure MIDI editor (don't use Modplug Tracker for MIDI files, ever!), which is why I recommend the AVI trick. You can safely compress the video to nothingness as it leaves the audio intact.

Hey Heihachi_73 i was wondering if you could help me with extracting the wav files from the "avl" is there an easier way than to use an hex editor and select and save the sections that make up the wav (starting at RIFF and ending before the next RIFF) as i cant get into the sound test section it keeps saying entry is not permitted unless a)credit is zero b)main door is open c) no other lockups active
i have the door open and zero credits so i assume it means there is a lockup active but no matter what i try i cant seem to get any further than that. thanks in advance

roly_au: There are programs which can rip things like that - I have an ancient DOS program which does just that, called MultiRipper. It must be initiated in the command prompt, in full screen though as it has its own video mode, and gets cut off when windowed. Copy mk6.avl to the mrip directory, then run cmd, alt+enter, cd pathtomrip, mrip mk6.avl.

Bear in mind that some items in the AVL file aren't PC friendly (example: custom uncompressed images called PICT, but not the Mac format); the sound is however.

For anyone who is getting choppy gameplay and/or stuttery sound:
If it's enabled on your system, right click the shortcut and select 'Run in high priority' or similar. If not, bring up Task Manager, go to Processes and right click mainsys.exe - Set Priority - High. If it still stutters, close it, restart the game and rerun Task Manager in the same way, since they will both be loaded in RAM rather than hard disk.

Kill off the taskbar:
Right click the taskbar, go to Properties, remove the third checkbox (Keep taskbar on top...). Click on the game's screen output, press alt+enter to put it in its native 640x480 mode, press alt+tab once and start playing away using the keyboard controls. Do not use the space bar to spin; it is actually set to the 'max lines' button which is annoying if you usually play less than the maximum lines or reels. Get used to tapping the Y key (or I if it's enabled; it does work on all games but it must be set sometimes; 50 Lions requires it to be in 16 button (Xcite cabinet) mode).

If you have a Nintendo 64 pad lying around and a converter (e.g. you're a Project64'er), you could try this:
On the N64 pads, you have just enough buttons to do this, 14:
D-pad U/D/L/R
A, B
C buttons U/D/L/R
L, R
Start, Z

To get it to work with the Aristocrat emulators, download joy2key. The interface is simple and you should be able to map any button to any keyboard key.

This doesn't include the coin input though. You can disable the 'take win' button if you want or remap it in joy2key if needed. The game takes a win if you hit a bet button or play on anyway.

Remember to close j2k after, as running MAME or playing Vice City or something else with a controller can cause some hazards (like ghost button presses).

Control panel using old N64 controller PCB:
I went one step further and made a control panel from an old broken N64 pad I found in the hard rubbish (which was missing most of its shell (M shape handles) and had no analog stick), and hooked it up to the USB converter. I just used standard rounded arcade buttons as there's no other item which is identical to the square clear/lit buttons of the real ones. It's arranged in a simple 6x2 box with 2 buttons added to the right, like the real thing. The box it's in is actually from an old speaker and it fits perfectly. If you like woodgrain. It's about the same height and width as the front of a PC. I never thought of it before, but you could even put a small speaker in your button panel to simulate the speaker of the real thing. The internal PC speakers from old 486es are perfect for this, with the help of an amplifier. Or, just use some disused desktop speakers and throw them in. Once the volume is set (make sure it's loud enough when the thing is put together), you don't need to touch them again.

The actual buttons were wired up randomly, it doesn't matter how you wire them to the PCB for these games, as long as you map them to fit properly.

I don't actually map the rules button, as it's not needed for gameplay. I created slightly different button mappings in joy2key so they all match, as the games are slightly different in layout (e.g. Indian Dreaming doesn't use a separate Start Feature button like the others). If you want, you can swap the coin with the feature button, but you will have to walk across to your PC to add credits. I cheated a bit by making the coin input button double for the feature button in j2k. If pressed fast enough, it doesn't insert coins but the feature still starts.

Hey Guys,

Can anyone figure out what sort of animation format is used? At first you would think it's the good old dos days FLIC.. but after downloading just about every FLIC tool on the whole internet (lol), they ALL seem to hate it...

Anyway, what I have found is they use a seperate colour pallet for each animation file. It also seems there is a 256 colour version and a 16bit colour version. And this seems to be 'pre set / expected' and so you can't always use another animation file.

Indian dreaming did not bother with the animation format for the dream catcher, they used a big pile of .png files, I think that's because they have more control of transparency and effects.. such as the sparkles flying everywhere! etc.

Anyway, it would be fun to mod these to make 'your own' game, use everything else as the base.

Heihachi_73 you got any ideas?

The FLIC-headered files look like a multiple format of the PICT graphics, although some seem to be compressed (eek!). If you think of a PNG file then an MNG animation you get the picture. One would have to make a program to display the files outside of the game itself. Opening them as 'raw' files isn't the most entertaining thing in the world, and yields bad results 99% of the time, and rarely supports anything besides about 3 raw image formats. It would definitely be good if a PICT reader/writer could be made. PICT and FLIC, you wonder what Aristocrat was doing when they made these games. Achooo.

I hacked out the main font of Indian Dreaming just for fun some time back, but it doesn't match up properly. You have to edit the FONT-headered file which shows you the start and end of each letter (this is so the letter I or small l is narrower than a W etc.).

I have actually made a hack of Slots_Dreaming using the real graphics last year - besides the way the game is (25 lines, different pays, no 2x 10 win, scatters pay any, sub is held for one spin), it looks pretty realistic (if you have played the 20 line version of the Indian or the records you get what I mean).

Pretty much zero when it comes to the 'MK6 Emulator', each game's code is placed inside the exe file, and would have to be created from scratch. You can't just copy the exe from indian to orchid and get it to work for instance. It might be possible to actually hack the program and swap another game's code from EPROMs if you know assembly, but it's best left to someone who can redump the EPROMs and write an emulator around them, rather than in them! The four games here are virtually unusable if an emulator is made too because of the way the code was used.

It's best if people start looking for the older MK4/MK5 boards, these could be added to MAME fairly easily (but getting them running would be another story). Same goes for the Konami games, which AFAIK use 68000 or PowerPC architecture depending on the machine.

I suggest MAME as the base (AGEMAME/gambling games are allowed in the mainstream version for now) because I think it would be more fitting with the video part; there aren't any nice layouts or electromagically flashing lights on our games! If you compared AU, UK and US machines, it would be like comparing a dual core PC vs an Intel Mac vs an electronic typewriter. ;)

As said before, it's just getting hold of a machine which can be the problem (in some places it is illegal to own anything related to gambling whatsoever, probably right down to the machine's artwork!), but once one machine is up and running, any similar machine could be successfully added without much trouble. I don't think there's any protection or encryption on the games so far.

I have purchased an NZ Aristocrat MPV game only. What would be the best program to do a rom dump with. The game has 4 chips all 512k (dated 2001) chip No M27C4002. Thanks for any reply

I wouldn't know first hand about dumping ROMs, but if you go across to the MAME or AGEMAME forums (video based gambling games are in MAME for the time being), they might be able to give you a hand. We actually haven't had any MK5/MVP dumps yet to add to documentation or emulation.

Hello puzzling,

If you have an eprom reader you can just save the files as .bin. They actually compress well so 4x512 will end up being 700k-1200k depending.

It would be great if someone would start to look at emulation of the mark 5 platform.. as I can see it would not be too hard as it's such a simple system unlike all those old school arcade machines with hundreds of random eproms everywhere with all sorts of different sound, video, controllers.

But... I imagine the next thing would be to find a guru who can disect a mainboard and start something... the guru will ofcorse need a board donated to him.. don't know if he needs a working machine to ram snoop... not sure what they do!?

on atlantis, but none of the other mk6 games.. i can hear the error but it doesn't display anything at the bottom as it's meant to.. essentially it seems to be frozen when i open it.
