Wondering if any of you guys can help..basically downloaded a program which had a virus attached..Now when i boot up PC and windows loads into desktop and i have no icons..I can bring up task manager and goto new task(run) type in explorer.exe and it brings my icons back for 2 or 3 secs then they dissapear again.
Tried putting the XP disc in and doing a repair but to no avail..anyone know how i can sort it so i dont need to format..Ive got too much to lose atm.
Please help and reply soon as im giving about half an hour then the fookin Fdisk is comin oot

if all else fails and you have to do a format ,take an image of your pc with Acronis and store it away from c drive then if you have any more virus probs or trojans etc just reinstall from the image takes minutes ,even installs all your progs back for you,has helped me on a few occasions.

Bring up control panel and create a new user (if you can access control panel). Delete all temp files from your local directory (including the temp internet files). Run regedit (if you can), remove everything from run folders - I'd also delete out all .PIFs in your windows startup directory.
If you can boot up with the new profile ok then try that, otherwise you could try and restore from a restore point if you have one set up on recovery. Also worst comes to the worst stick in your original xp disk and use the recovery option.
If that fails then post on here. I had exactly the same thing a few times a while back and these things worked for me.

This does sound fatal.
All you can do is get everything off it you can, i normally do this by using a bootable cd rom such as Barts PE.....this is a safe way to get the stuff off onto a memory card or cd but beware or transferring the virus too!
UBCD for Windows is also good.
But this is VERY techie......
Anyway, good luck.

Just re-install over the top destroying your current install, you shouldn't lose any files, just settings. I have done it several times on various machines and haven't lost a thing yet!!!

A reinstall, in my experience, will work IF you have removed the virus.
I would recommend that you do a clean install.
I have fixed many pc's, and never really solved a pc by reinstalling windows over the top - I am usually called back a few days or weeks later as the original problem has re-appeared.

But you can charge them again for another call out
I would do the install over the top and then a virus scan obviously! and run spybot too.. etc....

There's a definite joke in there somewhere but I'm too tired to think of one

Quick question, would this mean icons from within the "My Network Places" icon on the desktop with respect to browing the internal network, or is this just the taskbar area where the clock is?
