Hard Drive Issue
by Andrew Thomas (00:09 Sep 4th, 2007)
Further to the incident reported on the 28th August where mxserver.org, was experiencing problems with its hard drive, although technicians were resolved the initial problem, we have an error with the drive again, leaving the server unavailable.
As a result of this incident we decided to install a RAID configuration for mxserver.org. This upgrade was scheduled for September 9th (this Sunday), as the upgrade will require the server to be powered down for an extended period of time for installation and configuration. This would have given customers adequate time and notice to prepare, and the benefit of the upgrade taking place during a quiet period.
Unfortunately as this incident has repeated itself, we have again dispatched an engineer to resolve the problem and we are reviewing the plans to bring the maintenance work forward.
We are working to resolve this as problem as soon as possible, and will
provide further updates as, and when, possible. Once again on behalf of JAB Web Solutions please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Placed a 'any news?' message on their 'ticket' service this morning but they've not responded yet.
Last message I got read:
Rather than have to set the whole site up again from scratch on a different server and lose some posts, I thought I'd wait a while and see if their attempts at data recovery were successful.

Last message I got read:
Good Morning Andrew,
Further to the incident reported on the 28th August where mxserver.org, was experiencing problems with its hard drive, although technicians were resolved the initial problem, we have an error with the drive again, leaving the server unavailable.
Unfortunately, due to a serious hard-drive error, mxserver.org has had to be removed from service.
Analysis of the hard-drive has shown that parts of the data have become corrupt, including files required by the Operating System, and as such, cannot boot. Unfortunately as these errors didn't prevent the server from continuing its normal daily routine these errors were copied into the backup of the data and as such, rendered it unusable.
Our in house efforts at Data recovery have failed (this is what we have been doing over the last 24 hours), we are now in the process of sending the hard disk drive to a specialist recovery agent who we hope can retrieve a usable set of data. We appreciate the implications this has on customers, especially those that do not have backups of there site, we are doing our utmost to retrieve a working copy of the data.
We are in the process of setting up accounts on mxlinux on a first come, first served basis at the moment and then will be contacting the remaining customers to inform them of the situation. I must stress that we have not used a data recovery agent before and are unsure of the results that can be obtained, on behalf of JAB Web Solutions please accept my sincere apology for the trouble this will cause.
Rather than have to set the whole site up again from scratch on a different server and lose some posts, I thought I'd wait a while and see if their attempts at data recovery were successful.

Just to keep everyone up to speed with whats going on, here's this mornings message:
I'll post more news as I get it
DAD
We have contacted the data recovery analyst dealing with our server's drive and now have a breakdown of the files (and directories) they were able to find on the drive. We are now in the process of reviewing what data is available and attempting to match them up with the accounts/domains they belong to.
Unfortunately, only around one-third of the drive (by size) was recoverable and our initial analysis of the files and folders recovered show that a large portion cannot be currently identified until we receive a copy of the data. The reason for this is caused by the way in which Plesk structures the data and the way in which the damage occurred.
Plesk uses your domain name as the label for the folder and places all website files and folders for your domain into this folder. Files such as e-mails and databases are then held in different locations according to the programs being used to provide them.
The error that occurred on the hard drive damaged the inode structure, thus loosing the names of the folders and (as well as files) and the where in relation to other folders they belong, resulting in the hard disk drive being unable to create a logical structure. This leaves us with only a number by which to call the folder or file and therefore can only be assessed when we have a copy of the data available and are able to look for information that pertains to a particular user or account.
Once we finish processing the file we'll update each client individually with the domains we have been able to find that belong to them and the state within they've been found. This will be a two-step process, with more becoming available as we troll through the data returned.
We thank you for your time and patience during this time and if you have any questions regarding this, please let us know. However, we are experiencing a high-volume of calls and tickets at the moment and ask that you only phone us if absolutely necessary.

I'd get a new server DAD.
They seem very incompetent, and have messed you about completely. Have you sought to claim compensation from them? I think you deserve it for how they have treated you, and everyone else on their server.

Given that they're trying to do data recovery makes it sound like these numnutz at JAB don't perform backups. If that's the case, get the hell away from them - after you check your contract with them to see if you can file against them.

***update***
Fed up with waiting to see if data recovery worked so I've asked them to set up a new account and start again from scratch.
Just waiting for account details to be emailed to me (does "you'll receive them shortly" mean over 4 hours?) then I'll start and put things back together.
There's quite a chunk of data to be uploaded which is likely to take quite some time but I'll get there
Pissed off ain't the word!!!!!
