Was on PC Guard for ages as Kriss said its a memory hungry pile of dung..not as bad as Norton right enough..does the job but slows down your PC big time.

Im always one for trial on error when it comes to AV's/Firewalls..think ive tried just about every one ever made.

The ones im running just now that im quite happy with (for the moment) are Sygate Personal Firewall Pro and AVG Free edition..No probs with memory usage or CPU usage.
Mmmmmm...Sandy ive 'ad her ye know. :)

Yeah Liverpool but how much memory is the process "PC.Guard.exe" actually using..i found it always to be hovering about the 100k mark..whick is quite a lot of physical memory to use.

Check out Kaspersky. Its apparently the best, my work uses it, and we get free licenses for all our home PC's as well. Does seem to do a good job!

kaspersky is indeed the best, to quote another forum member "the russians dont f*** about"

It has some of the highest detection rates of any and is one solid piece of kit, might cost a few quid to pick it up but when it comes to the security of your system you shouldnt really scrimp and save....

I agree there too, had no problems whatsoever...used it for a couple of years now.

A note to remember on some that have...erm...'free licences' for their security softwares.....a little thought, if they can be cracked as simple as that just how secure are they really ;)

Virgin PC Guard = a joke! A botched bit of software Virgin let out to make it seem like they care about their customers! What do they know about security anyway? It's badly programmed and resource hungry; A sloppy piece of software if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong though; If you are a novice, PC Guard does seem fairly helpful from that point of view!- u'd probably dump it later, once you get your head around computer security!

Zone alarm is a good enough firewall, easy to install, fairly silent in operation. You don't need the paid for version as it comes bundled with extra's, most of which I don't see a need for. The free version is a fully functioning firewall in its own right.

The one built into windows XP service pack 2 is also worthy of stopping a lot of the unwanted.

Don't trust the windows firewall on and XP base install or SP1, it don't work.

If you're running your computer through a router, even better! A router drops anything that you originally didn't ask for, so outside attacks are kept at minimum.

I'm sat behind a router so nothing comes in unless I ask, i'm using the firewall built into XP service pack 2.

As for a decent virus scanner use AVG free, its good enough to stop most of the well known viruses.

If you're getting more than your fair share of viruses, stop looking at dodgy sites!

If your asking for trouble though and looking at dodgy site, don't use Internet Explorer, use Firefox, as firefox doesn't use ActiveX.

Dodgy sites use ActiveX to force resource sucking spyware onto your computer!

Your everyday website doesn't use ActiveX, so using firefox wouldn't 'limit' your browsing and you wouldn't miss anything that can be accomplished by Internet Explorer.

I set up a computer for my old man in 2000 and it's still going now; no re-installs, no viruses, no resource sucking spyware.

He just uses the windows firewall and AVG.

If that's not a testament, I don't know what is!

This is my two pence worth... I haven't used much else in the way of virus scanners and firewall, I haven't had the need.

On a foot note, I installed Zone Alarm and AVG on a mates computer and it repeatedly crashed for god knows what reasons. He also doesn't like SP2 for whatever reason, I didn't care to ask.

In this instance I installed Kerio Firewall and Avast, they seem a worthy combo, although Avast real time scanning does tend to slow things down as it scans everything that comes into 'focus' on your screen.

Damo.

Norton. Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!

Why does PC World use it on all their PC's?

It's bloody good, but your computer won't be much use for anything else!

Another resource hogging piece of s**t.

Funniest one I had was Black Ice Defender. it was ok, but tooooooo protective. I was on AOL at the time, everytime AOL tested to see if the connection was still live (every x seconds) my pc warned me of a harmless attempt to access my pc lol. If I went to get a drink, I'd come back to 50 odd attacks.

Why not get a router? As far as I'm aware, the router connects to the net, you connect to the router, no need for firewall? correct me if I'm wrong? I still have the Windows Firewall to be safe.

As for viruses... simple solution... STAY OFF PORN SITES lol :)
