Hello There,
Please! Could someone tell me why my the reset light on my scorpion 4 mainboard flashes constantly?
The machine is a Bell Fruit- Money to Burn.
When I power it up, the 4 power rail led's light on the mainboard, so I am assuming a working PSU.
Other than that, the machine plays dead, no lights, no reel spinning, just a little red reset led that flashes constantly.
I am in the process of looking for a workshop manual, but as of yet, no luck.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
Damo.

...I've had a quick trawl through the pages, using 'ye olde' search.
From what I gather, the PSU could be tripping every time the machine goes to cold start, hence the flashing reset light.
So I could just shorten my question to,
'Does the reset light on the scorpion 4 boards serve a purpose other than to light for a brief 2 seconds when reset or does the blinking actually convey a message?'
I'm gonna go for the PSU and yank it apart...
Another question is, (funny how they pop up!), would a MPU4 power supply from a Barcrest machine be a suitable test supply assuming I rewired the lines? It I believe kicks out 48 / 24 / 12 and 5 volts.
Hmm, just had an idea, unplug everything bar the board and see if it still throws a wobble...
Here's hoping!
As before, any comments good or bad would be helpful!

OK,
Story so far...
After reading a few posts on here, i've read, if the speakers click and the red LED flashes in sync... it's yer power supply.
Well, after listening and watching, I do get both of the above.
Now the power supply is sitting on my bedroom floor in 4 pieces and I see that 2x 400v 270uf capacitors have 'buldging tops'.
From what I recall from 'electronics 101', capacitors with buldging lids are duff capacitors.
Well, whilst waiting for them to discharge, i'm back off to 'electronics 101' to find a way to safely discharge said capacitors, should there be any charge left in them and then I shall test them; Well once I remember how!
Question now is, are there any techies out there who have had Sanken PSU's in bits?
If so, apart from the above mentioned and to add to my previous questions; Is there anything else I should be looking for, apart from the obvious burnt tracks, dead components and so forth?
I think i'm gonna leave it for tonite, as it is late.
Tommorow, though, armed with a multimeter and maplins, i'm going to sort the good from the bad and replace the bad.
On a final note, I am assuming that sticking in a 120mm fan to suck out the heat might prolong the life of the PSU for another year or so.
...Or am I better off chucking the supply and spending the odds on a new supply?
Regards,
Damo.

These Psus are normally pretty reliable in my experience!
I only have the 44 volt Sanken ones so I cannot flog you a replacement one.
Try doing everything you have said if it is not too costly or time consuming, I would be more inclined to replace it with one that is known to be ok, much easier and quicker!

yeah i aggree with impact.
i sounds like your mpu is stuck in reset.
also you are better having a fan fitted but sanken are usually ok without the fan ,its the stadium psu that needs the fan

Hi Again,
I've had the PSU in bits after following advice i've found here and elsewhere.
After looking at the bottom side of the PSU board in the light, I see no broken tracks; I do however see lots of crispy tracks and lots of dry solder joints along with an inch thick layer of dust.
I'm under the assumption now, that things do get a little hot inside the PSU, although I still haven't ruled it out.
What I am prepared to do now is power the board up on a computer psu, known working of course!
The idea behind it, is that if the board is fine, it should reset and give an error on the LED display because the reel motors arn't spinning...
If this happens, in on the look out for a cheap PSU that will give me 43 to 48v for the lamps and 24v for the reels and hopper.
I've had a look at a barcrest PSU I have in another machine, but it seems that the 48v tap doesn't have a return line of its own.
I don't want to cremate another PSU if I can help it!
Thanks for the advice so far, i'll no doubt post my findings later on

I've just powered up my machine with a computer power supply in the attempt to stop the reset light flashing... IE ruling out the original power supply.
I used two car batterys to supply 24v and the ATX PSU to supply 5v / 12v
As murphy's law states... it's still flashing.
Now i'm guessing, hmm... mainboard / game board.
Without swapping it out, i'm at a loose end.
I'm off to ebay in search of all things scorpion 4!

I've now located what I assume to be my problem!
Take one tired backup battery, leave it on the board for some years and it responds by dropping track eating gunk all over the place.
What I have in my hands now is one board, minus the offending battery.
What I see on the board are seven broken tracks.
I'm currently spending some time stood under the flourescent light in the kitchen, looking through the board, tracing tracks to their end points in order to try and solder some jumper wires onto the board.
I see four hours spent, two pot noodles, a little bit of cursing and maybe a list of components that need wires soldered to them.

as nicads only have about 5 years or just over lifespan its always best to solder jump leads between the battery and board to prevent battery leakage, i always used to do that with my machines so it saved me a fortune in replacing boards
how many said a psu fault? not me pmsl

OK, still no nearer to fixing this board!
I cannot trace one particular track on the board with a meter.
The track dissapears under an IC and I cannot find the other end!
I've tried patching up the track, but to no avail. It's microscopic in size- less than a mm in width and sandwiched in between 6 other microscopic tracks.
I've asked a question over on the mecca forums about obtaining a schematic.
I've been offered one, (three days ago), but I don't want to push the bloke who's offering. He seems a fair chap if a little bit busy.
Question is, does anyone on here know where I can obtain a workshop manual or schematic for a scorpion 4 board.
I've searched no end!- It's hidden somewhere!
I'm bidding on a 2nd hand board on ebay at the moment; but waiting and not playing is giving me grey hair!

Cost me a fortune to buy, in Diesel and the Original machine..wanted to get it running (*ATW) but no joy...i'll stick to PC games lol.
Like you lincs, here for fun not profit....the knowledge you give day-in-and-out is worth 10x in savings for the Ones with problems.
Saw this a few days ago and I could have jumped in then, waited to see if it was a One off post....damoyoung wasn't after a 'freebie' after reading more post's -- just to get his machine running, and we like that
* Must contact who's on the WIP after the scans........Can't wait for this to be released....get yer arse in gear lol
