Dear Fruit-Emu Team,

We are The Stinger Report - the leading amusement industry e-newsletter that covers the market. We are running a feature on the MAME scene and Retro gaming and also want to include a bit about AGEMAME and CyberSlotz'.

I have some questions about the society:

- AGEMAME has been linked to players 'grooming' machines and stripping them of their jackpots. Are your members familiar with this?

- The original MAGE firmware was instrumental in the FairPlay campaign about illegal payout on machines. Has AGEMAME found any other irregularities on real machines?

- How much support from the amusement trade are you getting?

Thanks for any help you can offer in answering our questions. And please subscribe free to the service if you are interested.

All the best,

Unfortunately, you appear to be confused. AGEMAME mainly emulates video machines from Bell Fruit and Barcrest, and has yet to accurately emulate any modern machine technology other than Scorpion 2. The playable game list is also restricted. I believe you are thinking of MPU3/4 and MFME with respect to 'grooming' machines, both products are no longer actively developed.

As coordinator of the AGEMAME/MAGE project, I would be happy to field any further questions you may have, but I believe you are giving credit to the wrong product.

Yours,

J. Wallace

(It's always a worry when I have to do formal communications with Berk from the Trap Door as my avatar, but it can't be helped).

I've sent a PM to them, because I don't really want an report going out giving me credit for MFME, and similarly, I don't want to be connected with FairPlay, no matter how much I supported it at the time, I didn't provide any tools to assist.

If the scene's going to get publicity, let's make sure it's truthful.

I am the author/coordinator of the AGEMAME project (formerly MAGE), and I'm willing to field any questions you may have about it. From the post on this site, I'm concerned about certain apparent inaccuracies, and confusing our product with a more mature closed source emulator called MFME, which has support for the games you are suggesting.

Perhaps we can discuss this, and I can give you my side, particularly considering the legal issues, and what we do to prevent 'grooming'.

Dear elcondor,

Thank you very much for your reply, and for your kind offer to field my questions.

Our e-news service covered the FairPlay story in depth, I think we were the only news service that followed start to finish (amusement trade papers a little red faced over the outcome).

My initial questions are as follow:

- Can you explain the differences between AGEMAME and MFME?

- Can you explain how you are stopping 'Grooming'?

- You mentioned inaccuracies, are there any other not covered in your above reply?

Finally, I would suggest that it might be better to send the reply to my email (editor@thestingerreport.com) and then we can take it off line.

All the best,

PS - Guys its difficult to reply to you when you lock out your messages!

I'm answering the specific questions asked from my perspective, but having read the publication in question I know it's not particularly dodgy.

For the record, this is what I sent:

AGEMAME is an open source project, but is far from complete, and can only handle a very limited number of games. The gamelist is hardcoded, and it is impossible to add a game unofficially without the PCB protection data, which cannot be obtained by the casual user. This stops 'grooming', as a strict rule is observed that no machine can be added to the list unless officially deprecated by the manufacturer. The focus is on video-based AWP and SWP systems, and emulation of all other systems is extremely primitive.

MFME is by far and away the more mature product, but is no longer actively developed - advanced users can create 'layouts' which mimic the various lamps and other features of a fruit machine. The last official release covers such systems as Barcrest's MPU3 and 4, Bellfruit Scorpion 2, and Maygay's M1B. to name but a few.

The main MFME release does not emulate any currently used technology, although a leaked build has primitive support for some other technologies.

Basically, I've just written a FAQ ;)

all games features on the site are, quite literally old. should an operator be poor enough to have one of these old machines in his arcade, it still has an mpu inside that will only pay a certain percentage.

having people who know how to play it can only help the cashbox, rather than people who stick a few coins in, get bored and walk off.

I agree that 'Grooming' is a little to close to the knuckle.

As I'm writing the feature I get to change the name - how about 'rehearsing'?
