Well, for a bit of fun, lets see who's in the know when it comes to machines a little older than the usual.

Simple. Just name 10 Fruit Machines from the 1980's. It would be more interesting if the 10 are machines you actually played rather than going through lists of old pics of fruities.

Oh, and for the younger members. None of this......

9 x Each Way Nudgers and a Line-Up. Thats not on sonshine. lol

Heres my 10......

I've given each a little write-up but no need for you to do that unless you want to of course.....

10 - BFM - LootSHOOT 10p £3 JP was one of the first 'grown-up' machines I ever played. A simple and addictive game I remember from when I was 16. 1985. It had a 'Melon Bank' which was a great feature that has lond vanished. 2 melons on reels 1 and 2 would pay the pot and if it hadn't been won for a while, it could easily pay the jackpot. The main feature involved the player having to win 3 skill shots of the words 'LOOTSHOOT'. A win paid all the coins in the relevent pot (maximum 50p per pot, 3 in total) and a 10p consolation if you lost. The machine I played had a dodgy token acceptor that took the old 5p coin and gave 2 plays. A nice scam that in my juvenile wisdom, I told the landlord of 'The Whalebone' pub but seeing as he knew me, he let me continue skanking it. Bet none of that stuff happens today.

09 - BFM - Flashback 20p £4.80 Was around at the time of 'Grand Prix' (mentioned later) and was a fun machine to play. No nonsense enjoyment that had you walking away like you had worked hard for your winnings. I'm not too sure as it's so long ago, but I seem to think that this game had hiddens. It was quite common to achieve £2 from all win exchanged features. Fun machine it was.

08 - ACE - SupaNOTES 10p play £4JP. ACE made some great machines around 1985 and this was yet another great. Winning a simple £4 was skillful rather than luck unlike todays machines. The cash link feature would have me walking away buzzing for hours afterwards upon completeing the whole trail.

07 - BARCREST - Nickelodeon 20p £4.80JP. Theres a chance this machine may be a 1990's one but it needs a mention. Changing win values could mean that all wins could potentially pay £4.80. I've seen it and landed it from 3 mixed 7's. Also, the wins can go the other way. Like a £1.60 win for 3 red JP sevens. It was a wild and varied machine that I play regularly, also emulated too.

06 - BARCREST - CashCOUNTER 10p play £4 JP was a game that depended on a great deal of skill. A simple trail that was played as follows every time. Firstly, at all costs, land on 'SkillCLIMB' then using the SKILL chance, advance to 'SkillNUDGES' If you were good enough, you could get all 10 nudges from the 'SKILL'. This is emulated and it's a great game too. Getting 'Ready Money' was relatively easy and came often if you played this well. Shame a later re-chip made the SKILL impossible to win once you landed on the '4 Nudges' position on the main board. I stopped playing when this happened. It was peobably my techniques that forced the re-chip lol.

05 - ACE - PrimeTIME 10p £4 JP. One of the last of a series of fantastic machines by ACE, pre-dating 'Play it Again' and 'Twilight Zone' Many hours of fun with these trying to get the 'Pound Go' feature. Wins were small but feature entry was regular. Around 1985-86 when this was played.

04 - JPM - SupaTRACK 10p play £4 JP. This machine was a delight to play. A cash clime feature accessible from quite a lot of wins could climb to the top when it was happy. £10 in 50p pieces was the goal. Anyone remember the 'purple cherry' that awarded 50p and a chance of the climb. Features were 'Cash Track', a random shot at the 3 flashing 50p's and a climb chance. 'Mix n Match' well, self explainatory there. 'Nudge on and on' was several seconds of nudges. Best to go for 3 pears there and a go at the climb. A great machine thats missed by me.

03 - BARCREST - TopTENNER. 20p play £4 JP. Theres a more recent game named TopRENNER but I'm talking about the 1987 ish version. My avatar shows a pic of the said machine. Very similar to 'SilverSHADOW' released recently. No roms are available yet for the older TopTENNER but whoever gets them will become my new best friend.

02 - BFM - Black Hole. This was a 2p play £1.50 variation of 'Exchanges Unlimited' 3 Space Shuttles earned the jackpot and bells paid a whopping 70p. 20p for 3 Melons was the highest cash prize you could exchange for nudges, giving 8 of them. A great machine from my youth that can be emulated too but no show as of yet due to no resources.

01 - ACE - Grand Prix. 20p play £4.80 JP. Simpilar to 'Open the Box' but with a racing car theme. This machine had the 'WATCH FOR MY HIDDEN EXTRAS' but I didn't see it anywhere else except Hull's 'SunSPOT' arcade. This machine subsidised my 'Youth Training Scheme' wages on numerous occasions.

Theres still many more machines that I'd really love to play again. I'm not really an old fart likes but I really do think that the fruit machine world back in the 80's is a world that was enjoyable and reasonably fair. Something modern manufacturers should be trying to recreate in my opinion.

These ACE beauties literally were ACE !.....back in the day 3 out of 4 of my local pubs had one of these in (2 had twilight zone, and the other had pay rise).....and i lost count of the amount of free drinking sessions we had thanks to these babies.....the funny part was watching some else play these and they didnt have a clue what to do when it said "watch for my hidden treasures" (where as all it needed was hold all reels and press cancel)...also i found a system where i could tell whether or not it was going to hold after the nudge (so as making sure that i left the highest value pair on the winline)

Ahhh the good old days .. the ones i remember are :

Hotshot 10p £3 jackpot ... i loved this machine and is emu'd so have hourd of fun replaying .. gambling to 80p then exchanging for nudges that didn't always save.

some others were Autoroute .... then there was one with banks of 3 x 50p that repeated ... was about 1986 and i remember going to town for a new pair of shoes for school ... bought the shoes and had £2 left so off the the arcade, Put about 50p in and got the repeater .. i think i got about £12 out ... my god i thought i was the richest boy in the world i went home gave my mum the £2 change ( which i think was the biggest shock she got) and kept the £10 for me .... kept me going for ages that....

i also remember another machine but i cannot remember it's name it used to have like a streak feature on it and i remember it going a bit mental and just empting the token tube .. now after about £30 coming out in token ( which i had filled my pockets with) the attendent came over as it seemed to be paying out for ages .... and asked what was happening .. i juat said i've no idea but it owed me a token jackpot ... she gave me another £3 in tokens from the bottom and turned the machine off... i just walked out and went to the other arcade in town that took the same tokens. if i remember right i didn't do that well with them but i was collecting all cash wins ( remember the old £1.50 cash £3 token jackpot)

i also remember a guy who used to be in the arcade all the time called kenny and if he's reading this then Thanks kenny from making those bigger boys go away who wanted to pinch my money and walking me to the bus stop ..... mind you all i ever heard him say was " lends a couple of tok's mate " but he did get me loads of jackpots :)

well theres my trip down memory lane

1. Nudges Unlimited (Barcrest) - the first machine I ever played. £2 Jackpot.
2. Fortune Numbers (Barcrest) - The first £4 jackpot machine I ever played.
3. Reel Crazy (JPM) - an interesting machine I played in the pubs in Plymouth.
4. Tuppenny Topper (?) - a 2p play £1.50 Jackpot. It was a Barcrest rebuild (Options Unlimited I think).
5. Hyper Viper (Barcrest) - played in Torquay when I was 19. I'd been going in this same pub for about 4 weeks, and then somebody asked me if I was 18!!!
6. Stop the Clock (Barcrest) - another machine from my Plymouth .Polytechnic days. Used to be in a pub by the bus station.
7. Break the Bank (Barcrest) - as above.
8. Chances Unlimited (Barcrest)
9. Options Unlimited (Barcrest) - sic. Played this in my local near my digs in Plymouth.
10. Labyrinth (Electrocoin) - a classic. May be a '90s machine. If so, substitute Razzle Dazzle (Barcrest)

As you may have seen there is a trend to the above list. What the hell went wrong Barcrest? I also played and enjoyed numerous JPM machines, but cannot for the life of me remember any of their names. Also there were 2 or 3 Ace machines (again the names escape me) where you could exchange a £2 or £3 win for £1.50 cash and 7 or 16 nudges for a chance of holding next game.

cambridgecableguy said he knew when it was going to hold after nudges
on the ace machines????

was this the one where if it nudged and a win was 1 more nudge away
than u had (ie £1 win in 3 nudges but 2 nudges given) it would not hold.
however if the nearest win was 2 or more nudges away then it would hold on the 2 highest pair nudged in???? (ie nearest win in 4 nudges but 2 nudges given)

top 10 eighties a?

I suspect it is because nobody has got the roms or artwork. I think this is one of the Top Ten machines from it's era, if not of all time. What do you think the chances are that Channel 4 will ever do a 'Top 100 Greatest Fruit Machines Ever'?

-Any one recall HOT POT!?
That had a Melon Meter too.
Loved it when it had a repeat at random on the Melon Meter.
Had such a funny "burby" sound when it did.

-How about READY STEADY GO?
The RSG symbol on the reel.

-SUPER NUDGE GAMBLER - that first got me into Fruiting

-REEL CRAZY! In my younger drinking days! Once saw someone put an absolute fortune into one of these & win bugger all. Mate & I then waited till they cursed & sat down, bunged about 20p/30p in & struck Jackpot & other big wins soon after that! LOL!

Won't do 10 as others named them all!
Though will say-
Fortune numbers - Yes- anyone can they try & emulate it?
Hyper Viper - Best- gotta be my no. 1
ACE lot- Hidden Treasures - Brilliant - Any emulation chance ?

Nudges Unlimited - say what you like, barcrest wouldnt f*****g be here without this machine.

Exchanges Unlimted - Add an exchange button to the above machine and youve got a whole new kettle of fish.

Lineup - Let's end it right here ok? (unless you want to end up on the wrong side of a bundle that stinks of old spice) this is the f*****g best fruit machine ever made, end of, triple stantons no erases.

Chances Unlimited - An evil f***er and no mistake, but I bet if you saw one youd still play it, even though you know its a robbing f***er.

Circle Skill - memories of this are bleak, but its being emulated soon so youll see what all the fuss is about.

Hyper Viper MPU3- Second to lineup this is barcrests crowning moment.
Again if youre a whippersnapper youll know that the MPU4 machine after the same name was spawned from this machine, as was adders and ladders MPU4.

Adders and ladders MPU3 - TBH I think this machine is shit.
Im not a fan of Nudges Unlim either, but there's simply no denying that this was what made barcrest who they are.
Id think alot more highly of this if it wasnt for Hyper Viper and the next in my list.........

Snappy Viper - Even though this machine was merely a 3 quid update to Hyper Viper it still offered something Hyper didnt.
The whole playstyle is different, chasing the 3 quid is no easy thing to do.

Rat Race/Goldmine/Ace Chase - These 3 machines are absolutely identical and all just as good (though Ace Chase and Rat Race look cooler imo) They are quite simply the 3 best 2p play machines ever made, period.

Win A gain - This machine is awesome, totally awesome.

Honorable mentions go out to....

Spoof, Super spoof, step n skip, lootshoot, Chase It !, Windfall, Winstrike and any other 2p play BWB as they were all awesome.
