Right guys need your help on this one cos i am just about to take a hammer to a Laptop that isnt even mine. :p

Someone gave me thier Laptop to have a look at..its running Vista and cannot connect to the internet via wireless..plugging the Ethernet cable straight into the back does the trick..got internet access no bother there.

In my house im on a router with a WEP encrypted key..my missus laptop connects to my router no probs and so does my lads upstairs..If i disable the WEP key on my router the Laptop(the one im working on) will find my network and connect to it no probs..but kicks my missus off hers.

When i put the WEP encryption back onto my router my missus's is fine after a reboot..but the other Laptop although it can still detect the network in range when you go to try and connect to it..and it asks you for the WEP key and you put in the "A67bTe903a...etc.." it says its connected to my router but no internet access is avalible.

Please if anyone has any ideas i would be most grateful..cos i spent about 4 hours on it last night..cos its Vista i dont really know my way about it too well.

Thanks all. :)
Mmmmmm...Sandy ive 'ad her ye know. :)

Did a vista laptop a few weeks ago with exactly the same problem.
Can't remember exactly how I fixed it, but I'm sure I changed the WEP key or/and type of encryption in the router (about 6+ options) and it picked it up and worked.
Before it wouldn't even detect a wireless connection, or when it did with (Limited or no connectivity) then it would disappear.
Lan worked no problem like you say, Sure I disabled the LAN by right clicking it as well.
Also had to re-install the router software to change wireless options, key etc.
Might have run the network setup wizard in the control panel too ???

Took me a good 4 hours, so good luck Posted Image

had a very similar problem when i was setting up my friends lan, the vista laptop just wouldn't find the network that an xp machine was already running on. Fixed it by stoping a file loading at startup in msconfig, The file was called LANMON.EXE or something similar and was preinstalled on a sony laptop, you know it when you see it (forgotten the exact name but it was the only file beginning with lan***.exe). A longshot but might be worth a try

Hi

Couple of quick things to check have you got your router set to limit the number of connections this is normaly done by limiting the IP rainge, well thats how i have done it

Have you got the MAC address filtering on the wireless side on this would cause issues.

And finaly make sure you have the same password encryption type set up at the vista end as you have at router end.

Hope this helps

I'd also try SP1 for Vista, as this addresses a number of networking issues with the original release (as well as all the other issues with Vista pre SP1).

Thank you very much for all the advice/suggestions guys/gals.

Must say i have given up on it for the time being..installed SP1 on it..same..tried all the other things you guys mentioned as well to no avail.

The only think i can think of is they have thier router set up for a different encryption and because mines is WEP thats why it wont pick it up.

Anyway the missus is gonna have a go later at fixing it..and i shall sit back and laff.

Thanks again all. :)

Had the guy from our web server over at work today to fix remote access to a lappy going to Dundee. It was bad enough trying to get that sorted. His parting shot was "Thank f*** you don't have Windows Vista.....Don't touch it with a bargepole for the next 5 years".

If the professionals haven't got a clue then I think that says it all really.
