I've had pop-ups telling me that AVG 8.0 is out for ages, but just kept ignoring them. Didn't realise there was a free version available.

Thanks for the heads-up! :)

The search engine bit with the green ticks warning of threats on certain pages is not bad for a freebie...still doesnt cope with java console virus and malaware pops 100% though,, cant expect the world for nowt i guess.

Just a little word of warning about AVG version 8, it has a habit of misreporting a virus called WIN32/HEUR from quite a few uninfected files which if healed or placed in the vault can lead to windows going Tits up.

Just a prewarning incase you end up with windows unable to find exe's or run anything from your desktop.....(luckily i backed up everything before i installed it)...oooops

Anyone know how to get it to autoupdate itself ?

When i had 7.5 installed,as soon as my PC booted up it would download the latest virus database..without me touching anything..and then load the database automatically into the progam.

Seems 8.0 has a habit of just sitting there untill you manually click the tray icon and check for updates.

Been through all the options...cant see where it is.

Uninstall your free version of AVG.

Reinstall it then at the screen where you enter the serial number use one of the following serials.

70-THXMV1-PQ-C21-SAE7Q-WPA-L496
70-THXMV1-PY-C21-SJ8LU-LVM-882B
70-THXMV1-P3-C21-SLV4G-DBK-KRQL
70-THXMV1-PG-C21-SKLC2-ML2-GXX7
70-THXMV1-PG-C21-S5A9X-4E1-JYR1
70-THXMV1-PD-C21-S34P7-PYJ-A1AG
70-THXMV1-PG-C21-SE559-IJG-F07N
70-THXMV1-PD-C21-SF09F-WYN-78UC
70-THXMV1-PS-C21-SDJRN-4GJ-KHKK
70-THXMV1-P8-C21-SI1GE-97E-7J71
70-THXMV1-P4-C21-SHVSJ-66U-CSKM
70-THXMV1-PB-C21-SEC1W-2CS-49AV
70-THXMV1-PY-C21-SI3VN-M6A-K7N3
70-THXMV1-PA-C21-S3TJI-4FQ-6CLW
70-THXMV1-PN-C21-SLFID-A0K-BVCD
70-THXMV1-PZ-C21-S55AX-GU4-LEF
70-THXMV1-PA-C21-SDRTZ-5UC-B0Y2
70-THXMV1-PM-C21-SJG44-7CX-4XFE
70-THXMV1-P5-C21-S8K3M-BKL-MAJC
70-THXMV1-PP-C21-SL9DR-UYJ-2VCT

Once you have entered the serial run the updates, it may say after this that the serial is out of date but all you do is re enter it and away you go.

You will now have the full version 7.5 licensed until 2112

Yeh, I've got that - if you get any warning notices about 'surely you know the seriousness of using a blacklisted key' or bollocks like that, just ignore it.

Sometimes they give you a deadline, and force you to visit their site to 'go legal' every time you check for updates, but just close it down each time, they go away again in the end...

Has no one worked out that AVG is the virus killer equivalent of using a split crisp packet as a condom yet?

Get a real virus killer.
