Why is it in soaps on the tv ie Eastenders, Corrie, Hollyoaks etc have fruit machines in pubs they are usually in test mode. Or if a character in the soap is playing one they use the cheesiest 80's sound effects to emulate them? Can anyone help? Do the producers need some more up to date sound effects?

I watched The Inbetweeners, it's a new comedy on E4, in the first episode it has a guy playing a Vortex with all the original sounds. I imagine when somebody 'wins' the just do a hopper dump?

I think it's to do with the fact than when the show is recorded there is no background noise, and the sounds are added later. Apparently it's the same with the police sirens in The Bill. When they record the video of the cars racing down the roads lights blazing, they are silent. The sound is added later.
Hence modern looking machines, blip and bloops from 777 sunset boulevard.

Where you came from, is gone.
Where you thought you were going, was never there.
And where you're at right now, aint no good, unless you can get away from it.

In the Inbetweeners, they actually had the real Vortex sounds, the guy had a few quid in the bank. They added on some Las Vegas style payout 'noise' for ages to make it sound like a jackpot, not a fiver. Impressively realistic for a TV program.

I think on the vortex, when you see the guy just get the board you hear the correct noises when the Hilo belt is moving.
That and in Shaun of the Dead it's the other way round! Correct sounds but no machine haha
