What's the best way to stop gambling?

If I don't stop I'll lose everything.

Sam.

Hi Sam,

As the guys said contact gamcare - however you can look up your local GA (gamblers anonymous) and they will have regular meetings, and while this is only a support group it's also worked for many people.. The one thing I would suggest having known two people who suffered from the same issue is taking your finances out of your control.. If you have a partner confide to them exactly (be honest) what is going on - you will be suprised how they will re-act -- Ask them to take over control of your money and be strong... It might sound silly advice but it's the only thing that worked with my mate... Nothing else was... But above all the key is honest and finding somebody you can talk to about it. It's never too late to ask for help - just the quicker you do, the easier it will be to sort....

Good luck

If you need external help then Gamcare as everyone suggests would be a good start. If you can do it yourself, find something else to spend / save the money for. A car maybe, or driving lessons if you don't have a liscence, a holiday, a hotel room two hookers and some cocaine maybe (Not something I ever did, I never had the chance lol), I dunno whatever, but just anything other than gambling.

Maybe buy your own machine to play, or just give some of the machines you like a good play on the emulator. Once you see a machine take a few hundred and only return £100+ a few times, it really sinks in.

Typical, a guy asks a genuine question, and the thread is hijacked by inane shite...

Firstly mate, only you can help yourself. Your friends won't, family won't, Gamcare won't... you have to want to help yourself, otherwise forget it.

What James said is spot on: give someone else total control over your finances. You've probably told yourself plenty of times you're going to stop, only to go to the cashpoint, withdraw cash and go and blow it. You need to remove the means for you to gamble, which means passing full control of finances over to a close family member.

You also need to identify what triggers your gambling - do you do it when you're bored, or when you're feeling down? Try a new hobby, join a gym, buy a bike and get out and about cycling... give yourself plenty to do to stay occupied.

The chances of you being able to call a complete halt to this straight away are slim, you will probably find yourself gambling again at some point in the future - don't worry about this, almost everyone trips up along the way.
