Rather than simply replacing that battery with another like part would it not make sense to replace it with a holder and use a CR2032?

Yep, that would make a lot of sense. They didn't do this originally because it would have cost slightly more!

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice - I managed to get the battery off and will go down the route of tape rather than solder for the replacement!

if you just tape it in place it wont charge correctly
that is why it has a bit of solder on there

will it not

its metal touching metal i dont see how it would effect it to be honest

or is it somthing to with it having to be in direct contact

I had a thought about this just I think what he is saying is its a little like mounting a CPU fan on a PC without thermal paste the contact will not quite be there so would be inefficient.

Yes, it needs solder. The contact on a pcb is on the surface of the board whereas most of the contact that the pin has without solder will be through the hole, where there is no metal to contact.
Even if you get lucky with a good contact then heat expansion could soon mess that up when the machine is on.

Couple of other points:
That is a lithium battery. It is not designed to recharge.
Lithium batteries do not tend to leak in normal use, even when they get old.

re: therotty:
Hi are you the guy who contacted me at work 2 weeks ago regarding mem reset & BNV code probs ?
if so sorry not got back but been on hol's.
The battery's are rechargeable, best way to get them off is either use a solder sucker from the underside of the board or if you haven't got a solder sucker cut the battery of on the component side but try to leave as much of the pins sticking up as u can, - then apply soldering iron to other side of board while gently pulling the pin from the side (using pliers not fingers!)
CPC do actually stock the exact same part with the legs on it (Maxell order code - BT01218 - £4.41)
but as sugessted any same voltage rechargable battery could be used if you had the holder and soldered fly leads from it to the board.
the higher the Ah rating the better as it will last longer - useful when using a machine infrequently at home.
