So I just picked up a cheap PSP and am looking into running homebrew on it. Had a read online about custom firmware but I'm unclear, various guides I've read seem to contradict eachother and I understand bricking them is all too easy.
I understand that 4.01 M33-2 is the latest custom version, I just checked my PSP and it's on 3.51.
Anyone in the know here that can help talk me through this? Great if you're on MSN to help me later once the nipper is settled.

If i remember correctly, first you have to downgrade youre firmware to 1.50 then put the newer firmware on it.
I had mine flashed & it was great, downloading all the games from torrent sites & putting them on my memory card.
I dont know how to flash the PSP myself but was trying to learn but never had the bottle incase i bricked it.

That firmware on it looks dodgy as well, it says on the net that it has been updated to stop exploits.

Pook, add me on MSN if you want and i'll have a chat tomorrow. just add @yahoo.com to my username
Your easiest route is to modify or buy a pandora battery, and find someone with an psp and custom FW to make you a magic memory stick with UPMS.
If you want, send me your stick or any memory stick (lowest 512mb AFAIK) and i'll get UPMS V4 installed on it which will take you to 3.90M33-3 and then use network update to update to the latest custom firmware.
I've never had any luck with the MMS creators for people without CFW.

The card has possibly corrupted? fake?
Go to memory stick if you can and press triangle for information, see if it says Magicgate: unknown or supported. Unknown means its fake.
Fake cards can become corrupt and refuse to work afterwards, I had a 4gig die doing a fill test.
You could always try formatting it in a pc memory card reader.

i did mine over a year ago using a pandora battery and memory card, youll need to buy a battery and memory card then if you google darkalex you can get the program through there to make a pandora battery and card and you should get a tutorial on there too. you could also just go to the piratebay and download the torrent from there with all you need. Once youve got a pandora battery and card you dont need to worry bout bricking it as that unbricks them and restores the psp back to factory sttings on 1.50 firmware. but becarful of some of the newer custom firmwares they have got glitches in them

Yes but not to an original firmware update.
Pook, we never had that chat did we.
What do you want to do with the psp? if it's just to play games then you wont have any worries regarding bricking. Even if you decide to delve deeper, its easily fixable with the right software and a modified battery.

Its easy to create your own pandora battery, and you dont need a psp already on custom firmware, you can d/l programs to write the memory card for you, I have done several, of these myself, for friends, everything you need to know is easy to find, but if you need some help, feel free to ask me, I'll try and find the links for you, also google dark alex and take a look at his site, its a great starting point,

Ok so with a new slim PSP on 4.01 (I think) is it easy to put a custom firmware on it? I did the old fat ones easy as they did not need a Pandora.
A great deal of the sites (even those linked to here) are quite confusing at times. Can anyone either do my slim PSP for me or produce a very clear step by step guide on how to do it. Cheers.
(also why does my phat psp connect okay to my router but the chuffing slim one won't for love nor money???... hehe.)
Playing the PSP on the big telly is funny
