By the sounds of it, you guys in the UK are doing it tough. If anything of the sort happened here in Australia, they would have to give you your cash in hand. I had a game in Crown Casino around five years ago where the 243 way button (bet x 25) was stuck down and it kept spinning 125 after 125 by itself. Got someone over and they refunded us the $5 that went in, turned the machine off and replaced the stuck button. No witnesses needed. Had it spun up a feature or a big win I wouldn't have minded either.
Maybe the fruit machines should be removed from the arcades and placed in licensed gaming venues like over here. It would save all the problems related to stingy arcade owners and kids swooping coins which are around them. Our machines by law must be in top working order or are disabled and shut down for the night. Normally, the only problems with machines here is when an elderly person decides to sneak a magnet(!) in, thinking it might nudge a reel or something, but ends up wrecking the CRT screen instead!
Arcades - ripping me off or am I paranoid?

They are licensed gaming venues, but the operators still seem to get away with murder. (some, not all!)

Just remembered, the machine that I got £10 X's instead of £25 Bars after hold after nudges was Electrocoin Super Bar X 10 - does it do this or was I robbed?!?!
