Goodness me people just stop playing them. I used to have a problem but cured myself - guess I saw the light in the end. I suppose I kinda replaced it with poker. When you get to understanding that game the feeling of winning a tournament and beating 500 other people dwarfs any feeling of satisfaction you get from putting your money into a piece of plastic with flashing lights, ultimately getting around 80% of your money back.

I still play in the pub occasionally but will only spend a few quid and stop. Make a rule to never get change to play them, never go to the pub alone so that you won't get tempted and stay away from those murdering arcades.

It's still gambling so in fact ur still not cured. To stop gambling is to live a gamble free life. That means no fruit machines, casinos, bookies, online gambling, poker, football, pool, lotto, scratch cards, bingo, shares. Infact any kind of gambling. This is ofcours if you have a problem controling it. If not then its fine. But if you can't control it then you need to abstain from it all together.

It's partly your fault that people have got into this mess.

This is a site for EMULATION purposes of older machines. Not playing strategies.
If you are more interested in playing modern machines,

Yes RH, poker is gambling, but is in no way comparable to fruit machines. Also, pool and and shares cannot be classified the same as there are elements of skill in those.

Since you play against other people and not the house, and there is also a large element of skill in poker, then it is very much different. I don't find poker addictive but I enjoy playing and enjoy reasonable success.

Why not have a pastime that doesn't cost you long term with every pound you invest? To me it is not even gambling, its a game of skill that if you are good enough at it, can make you a lot of money.

I was only ever attracted to fruit machines because I thought it was something I could beat, and I imagine many members here thought that too. Poker has given me a chance to achieve that. Thats all I was trying to say. My original comment may have been insensitive to people who have (or have had) a genuine widescale gambling problem. My "problem" was limited purely to fruit machines which may not be the case for others.

Anyway, enough about poker. Its not everyone's cup of tea I know.

You are kidding yourself if you belive that you can beat the house (same principle as your fruit machine analogy).

ok maybe I didnt mean to say it as that, but the thing that wound me up about it most is that if there are any sarky comments etc on this post the last people I ever want to see making them are arcade owners themselves.

aw right, this is something I want to do now, finish myself from gambling.

Altharic, maybe I misunderstand your comment, but the fact that you cannot beat the house is the crux of my argument. In poker you do not play against the house at any stage. I'm talking about poker played against other humans, and other humans only.

I play poker reguary and I must say pokers nothing like fruit machines .. pokers 80% skill and 20% luck, unlike a fruit machine which is set at a % and only pays when it has to

Gambling is gambling no matter how you win/lose your money its still a form of 'beating the house'.

Is this going to turn into an 'on line poker is rigged thread'? Oh I hope so, I love conspiracy threads.

The house or rake, is an 'annoyance' in on line poker. Some players are good enough that they can win enough to finish in profit after paying fees/rake.

Poker is a cruel mistress. Far more cruel than fruit machines at times.

Someone also said that golf is a cruel mistress. Especially if this happens.
What? Sorry errrr this..

FOBT gambling is an evil mistress.

Fruit machine gambling is a benign mistress that pays for Gary Chandler's curry. Occassionally this mistress throws up a PAY UNIT ERR 17 and everything has to stop. Maybe irritating, may cause a pocketful of pound coins.

WIN or LOSE gambling is compulsive, addictive, emotional, irrational and CONSUMING.

Fairplay to giving up, have fun in normality, you can start doing things like watching football, having sexual intercourse and talking to people.
@_!!
