£500 will get you a good reliable 64 bit compatable unit, that will not end up out of date in a hurry.
Compaq CQ50-110 Laptops - Cheap Compaq Laptops.. Buy the Compaq CQ50-110 laptop at PC World.
(Compaq CQ50-110 @ £400)
Toshiba A300D-13X Laptops - Cheap Toshiba Laptops.. Buy the Toshiba A300D-13X laptop at PC World.
(Toshiba A300D-13X @ £450)
Toshiba A300-16C Laptops - Cheap Toshiba Laptops.. Buy the Toshiba A300-16C laptop at PC World.
(Toshiba A300-16C @ £500)
I would say go with Toshiba, mostaly down to their reliability and build quality. Also I know a very good offical parts agent for them that can help with any parts if the need arises, and whilst parts for Toshiba are not generaly cheep like Dell's, they are much more reliable: Topaz: Toshiba Laptop Repair - Toshiba Authorised Laptop Repairs.

Not bad, and deffo would be able to run the emu's as they have been built around XP.
However, I would suggest looking at the 3 I suggested earlier that are not much more expensive, and also they would be easy enough to f*** off Vista in favour of XP. Reason why I say this, is due to their system spec and because they are 64 bit compatable, they would not go out of date too quick if say MS do go full-on 64 bit.
If you do this, download Belarc Advisor and print off a system audit, so you know what to look for in the way of system drivers (Would do this for any comp you have before you go fiddling about with the operating system).
