not really, this thread was about the imminent lose of a major high street retailer.
This retailer is now seeking going into administration with the possible lose of several thousand jobs. Then you chirp in with " im glad i play fruities for a living " allowing the supposition that you are or were a possible ex woolworths employee and have said "living" to fall back on. Otherwise what really was the f*****g relevance of :-
as we all know about you glorious career, as you have spent many a post glorifying it. Which in turn makes your very post a joke within itself.

Well the national lottery has pulled out its lotto machines and scratch cards from all woolworths stores and now the woolworths website has gone. Untitled <--that is the link for woolworths and it seems it dont even have a title too
Bought a DVD from there too yesterday so I hope it arrives OK. I got a despatched e-mail this afternoon so I'll wait and see.
Going back to what I said at the beginning of the post, Woolies hasn't had a niche for almost 20 years. (I know you disagree Zoltar)...but that's what the so-called experts are saying now.
It'll be a shame to see it go...but tbh it should have done something 10 years ago when all the big supermarkets started building superstores. It is neither a specialist in anything and it's not cheap....hence closure. You can't keep living off your name, doesn't matter who you are.

I worked for them some years back, and tbh they was wasting money then. I was the one that sorted all the returns. I was shocked at what they put in the bin, cd's that had a broken/smahed case, ps1 that had faulty controlers and toys that had just a scratch an stuff. It was crazy. I'm sure they could sell it off at a reduced price. I know they get some money back but still. I hated taking a hammer to a brand new ps1. Tho I have to admit one missed the hammer and ended up in my bedroom.
I think they will last till after christmas and sell most of the stock and then shut up shop. So I give them till jan 12th 09 the day they close there doors.

Things seem to be happening at our local Woolies.Popped in yesterday and all of their homeware section had prices reduced drastically.Up to 1/3 off everything.Don't know whether they are bailing out or just having a sale.
It was well busy though!
Having a look tomorrow to see if the DVD/CDs/games etc prices have been dropped.I doubt it.

They are moving as much stock so it looks good on the books for the administrators, expect some real bargains soon.

Not at all fella. I think I made an error saying that Woollies has a niche. As said earlier, 20 years ago, then that would be right. I had a think about it and realised it's pretty much 20 years since I shopped in there apart from grabbing the odd can of drink whilst passing by. Thinking about it some more, I doubt I would have even thought about Woolies if it wasn't for them being in the news.
I'm pretty sure that there are several companies who would snap up almost all the Woolies shops after Woolies shuts down. Unfortunately, there are some strange rules governing companies like ASDA, TESCO ect... stopping them from taking over these sorts of premises in the heart of high streets. I did hear once that TESCO is second only to the Church of England for land ownership here in England. Lots of your smaller convenient stores, the happy Shoppers, LonDis, Costcutters ect... pay their rent to TESCO who aquired these premises to stop ASDA/Sainsburys and the likes getting a foot in the high street. Come to think of it, if theres a direlect church in your town, the site is probably owned by TESCO. And predictably, ASDA too own many empty retail units in a lot of high streets. Never having any intention of opening a shop of their own, but buying it so the opposition don't get hold of it. It was addressed a few years ago with some sort of law to force the likes of TESCO to sell up these small sites. The thing is, TESCO have the last laugh by not allowing these sites from being re-used as convenience stores.
Something said on telly yesterday morning. 1 third of all the pound coins in circulation, are spent in TESCO. These companies are doing far more than simply opening massive stores on the edges of towns and making the High Street deserted. They own most of the empty premises there too.

Thinking about the TESCO ownership, my occupation is security. Namely CCTV. I do intruder alarms on my callout duty some evenings and I get plenty of callouts to little convenience stores. Where draughts have set off detectors ect... I've lost count of how many times I've said to the managers of these stores that they should get their landlord to sort out a bad fitting door or broken internal cieling tile, only to be told their landlord is TESCO and they won't spend anything to make things good.
The 'St Stephens' shopping centre here in Hull. A rather large shopping centre with a few big names trading from there. A bingo centre, a cinema, a transport interchange, soon to be Hull Truck, and including the Abermarle Centre. The whole site is owned by TESCO. Everyone else, including Hull City Council, being simply tenants.
I believe St Helens has had a planning application accepted from TESCO that enables the 'St Helens' rugby league club to relocate.
Again, here in East Yorkshire, Goole has 2 delapidated churches owned by TESCO. One pretty much adjacent to their 'Boothferry Road' store.
It really is disturbing to see what these giant companies own. And although I've singled out TESCO, the other big supermarkets do exactly the same.

eh let me see, NO
They have the must unhelpful staff in the qorld, GOOD RIDDANCE to bad rubbish!
I was down 2 till girls were talking, while chewing gum about what they were upto last night. not paying any attention topo the customers in any way, i got 4 cds she didnt scan and when my stuf was through she went £9.50 and kept talking and just dumped the change on the counter, she had scanned the cds through the secuity thuing that stops it bleeping so something that should have cost £75 (dvd and cds) cost me less than a tenner!
But I for one shant miss woolworths. In face will be nice to see a 3rd rate company dissapear from the high street all the shops are old they never moved with the times

I remember a fair few years ago walking around Woolworths here in Hull City centre and I caught my hand on a shelf and cut it. I wandered around trying to find a member of staff, for a plaster likes and to point out the accident causing shelf, to be told that they couldn't do anything. No plaster, no first aid, not even an entry in the accident book.
I'm wondering if I had collapsed from a stroke or something, wether the staff would have picked me up and dumped me in the street for blocking an aisle.
I guess this is simple health and safety. Good for them, not so good for a customer who comes a cropper.

Debenhams are another store that appears old fashioned. Old stores, old decor, not much spent to keep em looking nice. Another for possible closure?

Good point Zoltar. Next to go quite possibly. I don't think I've ever shopped there in my adult life. It's a shame though, especially for all the employees who if they aren't laid off before Xmas, know that it's coming straight after.

Maybe they just didn't care 'cos they know they are losing their jobs Tommy?

Yep. Although most things are more expensive there even on half price, maybe things like PS3 consoles may be cheap.
I'll have a look tomorrow and if PS3 consoles in particular are on offer I'll be picking up a few of them.
