There was a post not long ago about someone with a PS3 just out of guarantee going tit`s up, I shouldn`t have posted in that thread because mine has just died on me :-( It is the 60gig one and I was in middle of a game and it just locked up when loading next Level, so turned off and on then it wouldn`t read any disc whatsoever! tried bluray cd dvd and a avchd (got a hd camcorder)
Anyhow As I new my friend got his mended out of warranty rang Sony at beginning of week (my PS3 is 13 months old by way) and they were really good and organised for a courier to pick it up today (even sent a txt message to confirm would be today!) will be repaired or replaced (with refurbished one I presume?) and will bring back all FOC! so just a heads up it worth asking if it goes wrong just out of warranty! 5**** to Sony as long as it comes back all ok haha!

you should have got extended play

if you got extended play they would have repaired it or gave you a new one

now they'll most likely give you a refurbished one

& how much thhey charging for this?

Edit: i should mention you may not still have the ps2 backwards compatibility when you get it back

As said in post they repairing it for free so why pay for extended play????? (think you mean Continuous Play by way?)

what guarantee with extended play(Continuous Play) do you get that you are not going to get a refurbished one anyhow??? (can`t tell difference with refurb and new)

as for ps2 compatibility will let you know but my mate got same ps3 back he sent it still had his saves on they just put a new blu-ray drive in!

In the words of Homer Simpson -

"Extended warranty? How can I lose?!"

:)

I'm quite happy with the free 3 year warranty offered by Microsoft on my 360. If it goes tits up, as long as I don't modify it, I get it repaired / replaced (at their discretion) within 3 years. Can't argue with that!

Oh well, it's still better than nothing seeing as how most Xbox errors are 'RROD' based.

With the PS3, I don't think their fanboys are ready to accept the astonishing level of drive failures, normally shown by the same symptoms of the first post, and Microsoft is such an easy target these days :)

I agree I think they have had problems with the blu-ray drives looking on various forums a lot of people have had same problem all just out of warranty or nearly a year old!

They certainley have had problems with the ps3 , I work for a courier company which has the contract for picking up these machines .

I have worked with them for just over a year now and every day i pick up and exchange atleast two ps3s a day , now bear in mind i only work a two postcode area NE29, NE30 ya can see the how big this problem has been .

Its very rare they dont exchange straight away (old for new) or atleast a reconditioned one .

I have never been back to the same address twice tho , so it does look like they have solved the problem . :)

Sony forgot to pick up my mates ps3 40GB, I rang em back up and they arranged a doorstep swap instead of taking it away for 2 weeks.

Oh and they put new cases on the refurbs ;)

I can only commend sony for their ps3 repair service, it really is second to none and there are no quibbles. It is also true that a lot of failures are down to drives going tits up, im pretty sure this was kind of "expected" tho. The blu ray drive is still quite new in as far as technological advances go. I have a friend who works for sevenoaks hifi and he has told me that they have had plenty of standalone blu ray players back through drive failure across all makes. Any of you out there remember just how frighteningly unreliable your regular cd burning drives used to be?? £150 for a drive that in some cases burnt 20 discs or so then was shot!! Now you can get rock solid reliable ones for a tenner!! Its all about investing in new technology and if you have a ps3 its what you got. Plenty of arguments ps3 or 360 but imo ps3 all the way, but it seeems its always one or the other!!! The 360 is more of a "safe bet" but operates fairly near its limits in most instances the ps3 has a lot more scope for what can come along!!

my playstation is 9 months old and the video card went bang on it so rang playstation and they got a courier to bring another ps3 out and he took mine. Moral to this is you wont get a new ps3 youll only get a refurbished one they dont replace them unless they are less than 3 months old!!!!

Just a quick update!
I Got my ps3 back today! was my original playstation3 with all saves etc intact, and a new drive in after only 5 days!
So think that speaks volume for there service?
Even if it a inherent fault or not?

A lot of bluray players reguardless of the make or model will have the same drive in it made by LG or someone.
