REFINERY WALKOUT: Protesters to return on Friday

Talk about kicking us when we are down. My brother today went on strike with about 1000 other workers to try and block Lindsey Oil Refinery in lincolnshire from giving a massive contract to a boat load of Italians, and when I say a boat load I mean a boat that is in Grimsby docks with over 400 Italians on it. They are living on the boat which is serving as a floating hotel. There is another boat docking today sometime. Whats more annoying is they are sending all the money they earn back to Italy so it wont be spent in the UK thus damaging the economy even further. The company has set up a contract to pay the Italians a lesser wage and has said it will not be taking on any more UK workers. My brother gets about £15 ph and the Italians have agreed to take £10 ph. This is a bloody disgrace and should not be allowed. Gorden Brown said British jobs for British people and I say her her.

Agreed rh.When I were bricklaying we had the Polish coming over and trying to work for less than the Union rate.Thankfully the Union stepped in and they were ousted somewhere else.Seems to be happening in all jobs these days:bigeyes26:

I have every sympathy with your brother Rob, and having been a union rep in my time can understand the action being taken - I think the attitude of the Italians is despicable - I bet the costings show very little difference between the cost of UK labour and Italian labour when disbursements are taken into account.

These days I work as a contractor on substantially better rates than I did as a permanent employee, but I have to say, in my industry which is financial services IT there will probably be no British jobs left in 10 years as it is all outsourced to India. My issue here is that I work with the Indians who are taking over and they are polite, very well educated, sharp as a button, always smiling and happy to serve, and put most of the British employees to shame, so you can well understand why British employers in this industry do as they do. I just think when everyone is unemployed and cannot affored to buy their products; then they might understand.

It is too late to be typing this - it is probably absolute drivel lol

I don't know the answer, I am not even sure I understand the question.

Sorry RH. While I can see what you are saying I have another opinion :)

As far as I'm aware they tendered the contract out. This means that the Oil Refinery receives bids from various contractors and decides which one is most financially viable basically. I know they always say that they take other things into account but working in the sector I do, it always comes down to the cheapest tender.

Now we are part of Europe, we can't be racist about things. I know of Brits working on Russian oil rigs because we have experience and are better at it than they are...so I don't see any problem with this.

I heard a Company Spokesman on Radio 5 this morning saying that if any extra labour is needed then they will recruit from the local workforce. Sometimes we brits seem to think that we are "owed" a living and expect high wages. Helloooooo...There's a recession on!!!

I know for a fact if work was in short supply that I would take £10 an hour instead of £15. It's greedy British unions who are at fault for this. FACT!!! You are only worth what the market thinks you are worth. People in demand will earn more than people who aren't. Doesn't matter what profession you are in. I don't know why people can't understand that.

I have no time for unions. They f***ed me off in one job I had many moons ago....and I'll just say one name, Arthur Scargill.....Prick!!!!!

Right......Now turn the situation around.

If you owned and ran a successful business would you :-

A) Employ hard working Italian men who will do exactly the same job as UK workers for 33% less wages.

OR

B) Employ UK workers who you would have to pay 33% more to for doing exactly the same job.

UK workers (Not all but some) are lazy gits. Fag breaks outside their workplaces as often as possible, tendencies to take 'sickies' at the slightest opportunity.

UK workers (not all but some) simply don't have the dedication and commitment to want to give their all to their employers.

Just a quick look in hospitals tell you this. Coloured doctors by far outweigh English doctors. I wonder why ???

If I ran a business I would employ the best person to do the job - Regardless of nationality or colour !!

Didn't we Brits build up Germany in the 70's and 80's? 'Aufedersein Pet' was a great show but was losely based on real events of the time. Brits working in Germany, many not able to speak the lingo.

At the end of the day, it's unfortunate for the British workers who are losing out. So these companies hire cheaper labour. What gets me is that the end user of the manufactured product sees no benefit whatsoever. The savings made in labour by the company, is exclusively profit. Our oil based products won't be any cheaper for this.

Same with banks ect... moving out to India and saving colossal amounts of money using this highly skilled but cheaper foreign labour. We the public don't benefit. It just means a bigger cut for shareholders.

Whilst in principal, I have no gripes with foreign labour taking up once British jobs, I do find it saddening that only the hirers gain in the situation. Benefits are never passed onto you or I. And this is unfortunately the legacy of 1980's UK capitalism. Where it was drummed into everyone that it's good business to extort what you can from your customer, whilst paying as little as possible to create the product you supply, namely paying as little as possible to your workers.

I don't get this. What happens to the money? surely it comes back after its been exhanged into whatever currency of the country it was taken to? I still say making more notes is the answer

Yes but as we all know, only white people are subject to being racist, never the other way *whistles* ;)

Is that what it was like at Frontline Steve? I know that when I worked in the petrol station I worked my ass of for 3 1/2 years. The last 57 weeks I worked 50 hours a week on nights and didn't take a day off sick for the whole time I was there. Didn't take my holidays too as they was short staffed so just asked to have it paid to me in my wages. Then when I started to find it hard to do my duties because of my arthritis I asked to be moved onto days as this was less work than doing a night shift on my own and the manager said no you have to stay on nights because that's what your contracted to work. I asked to have help with stuff I found difficult and they said if you cant do the job then leave. So I left, and the job centre took this as an unsatisfactory reason to leave my job so sanctioned my JSA. So went to the doctors and told them I didn't think I could work at the moment due to stress and my arthritis so was put on sick, which meant full incapacity benefit too. Just makes me mad that my employer would not take my illness into account and help me to carry on working.

The fact the work has gone to an Italian contractor is not a massive issue to me - the bad thing is that they have stated they will not employ British people as part of the contract. If a British firm won it and said we will not employ any Italians they would be ripped apart.

Racism is distinctly something used against white people in today's world.
