Because all the other arcades i go in these days you do not see them any where, but in my local there still goin strong because the owner no's it brings in custom mainley the players who have been goin down there years. The token jackpot machines they have are- Popeye £6, Popeye Tresure Hunt £6, Bar X's £8, Roller Coaster £8, Monopoly £8, Big 7's £8, Crystal Maze £8, Squids In £8, Jewel In The Crown £8 & Las Vagas Strip £8. I live in the South East (eastbourne) and as far as i know there isn't any arcades with tokens around anymore.. I'm gutted about it to as i think many cash conversions of old machines are bad, except a few...
Where abouts is your classic arcade? Maybe i'll have a holiday near there and pay visit one day? who knows???
I think there's a classic arcade in blackpool?

Yep still going strong in an arcade near me. Mostly Electrocoin machines such as Bar X, Red Bar and Big 7. Stood there for quite some time with a handfull of tokens and still only manage to win about a quarter of that amount back in cash. Still, I'd take that gameplay any day over some of the crap that stands there in the arcade these days.

what was the thinking about tokens?
Some arcades would charge them for shopping vouchers.
Some pubs would chage them for beer! However as most machines are rented in pubs, how did they turn the toekns into cash?
Did machines sway more to a token payout, than cash?
All I can remember is machines always used to run out, machines never flashed IOUs back then!

Our pier used to have token payout machines, but they wer'nt marked as it. now they've got rid of them.
One time me and a friend where playing a machine (using £1's) and we won the £8 jackpot on it, and to our horror it all shot out in tokens haha.
we took them up to the desk to be given a £5 marks and spencers gift voucher (thats exactly what 14 year old boys want) and i cant remember what we done with the other £3 of em, but yer IMO they where a good bit of fun, but shouldnt be mixed with the cash prize machines

There is a small arcade on Great Yarmouth seafront that had some machines that still payout tokens, don't know if the machines are still there as I haven't been to Great Yarmouth since last year.
I remember them having Bar X's and Red Sevens (?), Road Hog, Monte Carlo, The Roll and a few others still paying out token Jackpots.
From what I can remember this arcade had a bingo room attached to the side and was the first arcade you came to as you walked up the seafront towards The Pleasure Beach.

I'm pretty sure that the token jackpot itself was set by law, and cash could be paid for wins up to 50% of that value. So £3 in tokens would be a £1.50 cash limit. And so on.

It's an old story, but oh well...
Last time I went into Southport Nobles (on Chapel Street, next to Primark), I ended up on the token jackpots not knowing they were token jackpots. Admittedly the arcade deserve to be punished (I found a Bar x labelled as £4 Cash / 10p when it actually paid out tokens), but still...
I must have spent a good 30+ minutes in there, for a couple of quid stake.
I actually got MORE entertainment from the thrill of trying to turn my tokens back into cash.
I forget exactly how it went... something along the lines of £1 in for £8 in tokens and a £1 coin, that £8 in tokens going between a couple of other 10p play token machines... before I knew it I had £12 in tokens and about £3 in coins.
I quite enjoyed the principle of playing purely for the (you'd assume more easily achievable, lower value) £1 XXX wins, off let 'em spins. Being dodgy old Electrocoin stuff, you'd leave a let 'em spin on XOX only to get 3 BARs for another £4 in tokens!
Have to admit, it was one of the most enjoyable afternoons I'd ever had in an arcade, for the lowest stake.
I'd imagine they are still there, as 50% of the arcade contained those, and other low-stake BAR X type machines, and the other 50% contained a selection of B3 machines and a sit-down PTA.

JEM's still seam to be running strong though, especially noting their new place in Broardmarsh, next to the Bus Station.
If I remember right, they have 1 in Derby (Near Blue Peter pub), 1 in Bullwell, 1 Broardmarsh, 1 Arnold (Including HQ and lock-up), and 2 in Long Eaton (One with bingo), all which have a min of 3 staff running each site, and two techies (Cedric and Dean), with Long Eaton non-bingo having 2 shifts per day with 2 staff on each, and 9pm opening (8pm on a sat, closed Sunday).

token jackpots were a brilliant idea back in the day, Ive spent many a day in the arcades not spending any real cash... Gone are those lovely times. No tokens to be seen in the south east at all now... Eastbourne pier used to be full of them...
Gutted, 20 quid lasts about 5 minutes now, thats mainly why i quit...
BOO HOO... LOL!
