Apparently, if you have a large horseshoe magnet, a couple of light sensors and a box of matches (or something like that) - you can make a fortune
Seriously, though, nowadays it seems to be a case of luck and playing the machine at the right time. If you play club machines (£200 + jackpots), you can try waiting until it is full (the coins go clunking down the overfill tubes into the buckets below), and put in lots of money and keep losing. eventually the machine is forced to pay out a jackpot or three.
I tried this on my club vegas machine (£200 Jackpot), waiting until it was full then kept putting money in and losing whenever possible. It took about £300 before the jackpot came in - at this stage I thought this doesn't seem to be particularly profitable - but within 5 goes another 2 jacpots dropped in - so I got about £600 pounds out (after refilling the machine after the first two jacpots).
Todays pub machines (25/30p play, £15 Jackpots, ~78% payout) seem a bit of a ripoff to me - if they upped the payout to about 95%, they would still make money and possibly(!) more people would play, but thanks to fruit-emu I can overcome my fruit machine urges without losing any money.

Seems to me that most chains are now using 30p £25 70>74% which is a bit nasty - if you don't realise its just been hammered by someone you can quite easily lose £15 without a board [after all, it is only 50 spins]
Found a local last nite, has MDM The Mob on the 5p/£5 with that annoying 'plums or below and you might get a quid' routine...mind you, £5 in £5 out so all in all not bad :)

You know I always thought that Wetherspoon's bandits were bloody tight and now I have the proof. Most Wetherspoon's pubs have 3 or 4 bandits and must make a fortune which probably explains why they can sell their beer quite cheaply.

I can't play fruit machines in Weatherspoons pubs - not my local one anyway, their lack of music unerves me. I need a beat to lose my money to!
Having said that I did rip £50 out of "The Italian Job" once for less than a tenner in a spoons pub. I love it when a repeat chance actually works!

I used to find that Spoons machines played well, probably because so many old fogies were playing them from 10am with their Egg, Beans and Guiness.
To be honest , you would be surprised how many pubs are set to 70%. I go to a 'Hungry Horse' and they always play like shite, 30p a go and I dare say they are 70% as well!
What I would like to see [as that whole Fairplay campaign all seems pretty pointless to me!]..is an increase in % payout across the board as seen [I think] in the Isle of Man...or is it Wight??
It's the island that Alex Maroney lives on anyway!!
I'm sure he mentioned that their minimum % is about 82%
When I moved my Spiker from 70% up to 82% I was amazed - Over a period of £200 on 70% and £200 over 82%....when it was on 82% it gave WAY more IM's and Skill Stops and tended to not kill you after dropping you from the Super Trail.
So, there you have it. Keep machines as they are, drop back to £15 Jackpot/25p Play and up % to a minimum of 84%......sounds fair to me!!

I remember reading an interview with JDW's head prat Tim Martin, where he said that about half of the companies Net Profit comes from Machines.
I'd also like to know how they get round the 2 machines per bar rule.
Bradford has one JD Pub (with another opening right next door to my pub this year ), and it has 1 bar, and 4 AWPs. I assume they get away with it due to the size of the bar.
On an average week, we might take around 200 quid out of a single machine, but after Leisurelink takes there cut for rental and taxes, we are left with around 100 (78% payout).

Is that the same feature where it had the laughable 'JDWs guide to playing slot machines?'
They should have been sued for that - I wish I could find the original magazine, it may be around here somewhere.
Something along the lines of a 1>12 hi-lo gamble being random, the magic 3 hold system - sounds like they got that straight out of the eBay MAGIC FRUIT MACHINE EBOOK :)

Yeh, and that fat ginger stuttery twat of a manager at the Gravesend JDW (Stanley Pocock, next to McDonalds, FIVE AWP's and a SWP) had the f*****g nerve to tell me "th-th-this isn't an-an arc-ar-arcade, you know, either b-b-buy ano-no-nother drink, or I'm sw-sw-switching it off" - WHAAAAAT a #@#@#@#...like to know how they get round the 2 machines per bar rule...

Yeah my local Spoons has 3 fruities and a touchy screeny JPM "ITBox" type thingy. Why so many? Anyway...
In reply to them taking loads of profits out of the machines I was in there Saturday night and only saw one of the machines used all night. I was in there a good few hours (From about 8.30 - closing time) and unless lots of pounds were put in while i was taking a whizz they hardly took anything.
The one machine played I saw a guy take £12 quid out in total and definitely put more in. The only other money it got was £5 out of me before I dropped a tenner of the other guys money.
Where's the profit? (Apart from the OAP outing possibly earlier in the day, as Benito referred to...) Surely when I was watching was the busiest time for them. (It was full by the way...the pub i mean...I hate not being able to get to the bar!)

Yep it normally takes a good half an hour to get served in a spoon's on a busy night. I have noticed their bandits tend to get played a lot more during the daytime. Unless you are on a poach, or have a trick or two up your sleeve, I seriously suggest staying away from the things anyway. 70% is f*****g scandalous.

On a similar topic to this, is realfruits.co.uk any good?
It seems to promise a lot of good stuff but I don't want to shell out £25 that I could just as easily lose in a machine, to find out it doesn't tell me much i don't already know!
Anyone with a membership care to fill me in? Thanks.

well the club where me and me dad go for a bevvie has three £200 club fruities. Club Casino Crazy (yeah defo me fave), Club Cashraker, and Club Cops and Robbers. I was reading a report of club profits on the notice board and saw they made £45,000 yes GRAND from the fruities!! That's AFTER the supplier takes their cut. I think i'm in the wrong job lol
Speaking of Cashraker i like QPM ones cos you can take when you get a question mark instead of getting fired off. Handy. But tempting to gamble anyways!! I had the JP out the other month with the 3 boats feature. Along the top cash amounts till JP. Nice!!
