I just got hold of a cheap JPM Proteus because the monitor was broken so it needs some work. I may also need a touch screen as the person I bought it from intended to give me one but we forgot in a mad rush to get it in the car before it got rained on. I am hoping he will post me one.

Unfortunately I have also discovered that the motherboard is faulty as the External Cache has to be turned off for it to boot. I then checked the CPU and found the socket is cracked due to it obviously having overheated in the past, probably what broke the cache or perhaps its just a CPU fault after all? The socket however clearly looks scorched and brittle so I am reluctant to chance replacing the CPU as it seems more likely the board is at fault.

I was wondering if anyone here knows a good source for parts as eBay and Google are coming up blank.

Preferably I would like to get hold of an IO card so I can replace the motherboard with a P3 I have lying around. I was a little disappointed to find I got the JPM custom board instead of the P2 with IO card, which would have been an easy upgrade.

Bear in mind I got the whole unit for £20 (though it cost £15 in fuel to pick it up) so even if I have a lot of parts to replace I am hoping it will still work out cheaper than these usually go for. Even if not, its still better than having to pay it all up-front and I am considering attempting dual-booting the machine too so I can use it as a jukebox frontend too, something I will at least be able to do even if I can't get it working again as a quiz machine. But I am optimistic at this point.

Probably worth asking the lads at the Mecca - The MPU Mecca

Also (if you haven't got one), I posted a manual for this machine a while back.

Yeah I did find the manual you posted, thanks.

Its a shame mine is the JPM modified K6-2 board model, not the P2 with ISA IO card model the manual describes. I also got a bit lost trying to figure how to remove the hopper, the instructions do not seem to make sense. Was only trying to do it for cleaning purposes as there was a LOT of dust in the cabinet.

As for the parts, I may be in luck. I called the place I bought it from and will be going back to collect the touch screen and he said he would also look to see if he has an IO card spare. That would be amazing as I know I can stick at least a P3 in there, not sure if anything newer has ISA slots but I already have the P3 board/CPU.

I also managed (with lots of hopes and prayers, despite not being religious) to squeeze my old 19" Dell monitor in there for the time being (until I get ambicious and try to fit an LCD).

The tube brackets perfectly match, but I had to just use the top and bottom bracket without the rest of the frame due to how the electrionics were mounted. Makes it not quite as rigid as the original monitor but its worth it for a SVGA monitor in there. Means I can attempt a dual-boot configuration so I can use it as a Jukebox too. Wonder if you can increase the refresh rate? A bit annoying how the mouse/keyboard seems to get disabled once booted so I can't get into the Win95 settings to play around.

Getting the monitor in was scary though. At first as the motherboard is just resting inside the cabinet the tube was pressing on it at causing the picture to keep cutting out. Did not cause any damage it seems as I adjusted the monitor brackets and the motherboard which seems to have fixed it. Just a bit nervous that a metal strip which ran around the front plastic (in front of the edge of the tube) had to be omitted as well as an insulated ground wire which ran around the outside of that (anti static?).

All bonding is still in tact (I'm not entirely insane) barring the metal shielding which was around everything. Not sure if I should attatch any more bonding wires? I think the touch screen itself has one but as I do not have it yet (just loose wires where it was ripped off) I am guessing. The touch screen will act as a replacement for that outer grounding wire to prevent static buildup will it not? The copper film however, I am lost for what it was.

Whilst I have no idea how to help on this, it sounds a very interesting project. Keeps us informed Alex!

Went to the place I got it from, they couldn't find their spare touchscreens only the one they ripped out of my Proteus. They couldn't find an IO card either, but I asked someone on eBay selling a Proteus and they gave me a number of someone to call who should be able to sell me one. They found me another motherboard but the parallel port is really loose on that, might be broken.

Anyway the touch screen is top priority and I need to know the wiring to resolder it back on. Its not damaged (sticky from the tape as it was poorly stuck in place on the screen it seems, what is safe to clean it off?) but only two of the wires still has a piece soldered on, so I can see where they go. The rest would be guess work unless someone knows otherwise. I could have sworn I saw it mentioned somewhere what each wire does, but I cant find it now.

Found someone who told me how to rewire the touchscreen, that is fine now.

I also discovered the onboard sound card was broken on this motherboard (figures both boards would be faulty) but through guesswork got it disabled and stuck a Soundblaster Live! in it.

Everything is working now apart from one thing - the sound on the videos keeps stalling and so going out of sync. Its odd as if a video is not playing the sound is fine.
