Just got sent an email......Normally I just ignore them but out of interest I checked 0709 on Google and it don't show..So I have posted this just-in-case.........It read

Latest mobile phone scam.
A missed call may show on your mobile phone. The number is 0709 020 3840!
The last four numbers may vary, but certainly the first four numbers will
remain the same! If you call this number back, you will be charged £50.00
per minute! People have complained about their phone bills, once they have
realised the cost of the call, but apparently this is completely legal. So
beware, do not call back numbers beginning with 0709. Pass this on to all
people you know who have mobiles!

Yup guys, this is real. I work for a mobile phone network and it's something we are aware of, but it's not a new risk. These scams have been going on for a long time. Quite often it comes from an 090 number as opposed to an 070 number, and as far as I was aware the latest one was an 090 number too but i may be wrong. The £50 a minute comment is over exaggerated too, you'll get charged £1.50 a minute (Maximum you can get charged for a premium rate number in the UK). So be careful! And don't think once this one has finished you're safe cos in a few months it'll happen again, this is the 4th I've seen in the 12 months I've worked for the phone company!

Not your fault i know (far from it) but why has my VERY well known network not informed ME????

No offense but I'm always pretty skeptical about mobile calls/messages w.t.c and if I am not expecting a call and I get a missed one I don't necessarily follow it up..
...probably explains why I have no friends :)

If you don't check numbers on these missed call things and don't realise it is a premium rate number you deserve everything you have coming to you!

Oh, and if it says you have won a prize, yet you have never entered a competition in your life [except maybe in the Beano / Dandy in your youth :D ] then it's a safe bet that you haven't won.

That isn't to say that phone scamming is OK - but as long as people are ignorant when it comes to who messages are from e.t.c. then I can't see it coming to an end. Just like I can't see spamming of email coming to an end :)

I get those stupid messages appear on my phone as well, but i haven't had the missed call ones that i know of, mind i don't ever phoned back to any missed calls that i know know who the caller is....due to these junk calls, messages....etc. Its bad enough in mails, but like the paper reports, u even get picture messages now as well, and if say ur child has a mobile u get all them pron ones as well....nows thats when its going too far....i can just about cope with junk mail, but a phone is more private as it can distracting and its always with the owner. Important calls etc may be missed because of constant bombardment of them messages. But anyway i know they are making some laws that will be in place hopefully in a few yrs that will make it illegal for them messages, texts....but i know the spammers will find a way round it what ever they impose, if anything at all.

Well the gits will never get me, I hate getting phone calls from numbers I don't know so if I see a missed call from an unknown number the chances of me calling back are....zilch...

Come to think of it I do seem to remember getting a missed call from a dodgy number, ha! YOU FAILED! muhahaha...

*Ahem* Sorry.
I'm back! yay!

I know, the very well known network I work for should let people know but, umm, they don't! Just expect people like me to take the shit from it when people complain! It's the same as with the text messages though telling you you've won prizes.... Ah well, they don't care as long as the director gets his he-uge pension!
