I was scanning my PC for junk using QuickCleen, I noticed while scanning, it was looking at a folder called C:RECYCLER and some sub folders like {23545656465798} you know what I mean. I asume this is a backup of all stuff thats been deleted = stuff in the Recycle Bin is not really deleted? What is it for? and if its crap, how can I delete it? :?:

Thanks.

How to stop stuff going in the Recycle Bin?
Right click on the Recycle Bin, and click on Empty Recycle Bin - thats if you want to just empty it.

To stop stuff going in there altogether, Right click on the Recycling Bin, and hit Properties. Check the box which reads

'Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted'

Hope that helps,

There are file backups everywhere... even when you delete them or even quick format the drive any file can still be found and brought back ( i can see some worried faces now LOL  )

...except for the fact that I have an ISO full of forensic tools and and other assorted booty, so I doubt they could recover ANYTHING on my hard drive :D

An ISO image file is an image of a CD-ROM disk saved in ISO 9660 format.

Yup, sure is :)

quote : 'Evidence Eliminator, anyone?'

Sure as hell doubt it, never seen an evidence eliminator that looks like that.....basically writes at warpspeed binary garbage over the HDD, then rinses, then repeats :)

Do you have Norton installed? C:RECYCLER is used by norton , it uses the folder for backups and things you may want to recover.. if you do have norton open the program and find the delete protected files button ( if you want ).

I don't use Norton, I use AVG, the Free full version www.grisoft.com

I've found, by looking at other peoples PC's and work, that they all have this C:RECYCLER folder, I think its (as said in previous posts) a backup of the deleted items, so its not really deleted from the OS.

Wether or not you have a virus scanner, its still there.

Just do what I did last time - wipe the Hard Drive and bung Linux Mandrake 9.1 on there :)

...Of course I then found out that Linux wasn't compatible with my ADSL modem and so I was pretty screwed and ended up going back to Windows -

While I may hate Windows, can't argue with the Hardware Compatibility :)

Maybe you could get at the Recycler folder from Safe Mode / Dos Prompt?

Just an idea,

The Recycler folder is what lets you restore files, each user that logs onto the computer has one. This is what makes the recycle bin semi-useful cos I don't know about everyone else but i've deleted files in the past by accident and thanked beejeezus that I could restore them!

It's nothing to do with anti-virus its a windows thing, it doesn't keep files once the recycle bin is emptied (Though it is correct that any deleted files can be recovered/recovered enough to incriminate if necessary).

So now you know, it's just a hidden folder that works in conjunction with the Recycle bin.

Here's what Microsoft have to say:

http://support.micro...&NoWebContent=1

And i'm not sure how relevant this is cos it's to do with the uni, but it's along the same lines:

Yeah broadband is bad, my uni connection is worse - on direct downloads i get 500k/sec on a slow day and have got over a meg a sec plenty of times.

This has lead to many days of cd burning...

FAO SANDORAN:-

Sorry mate, but can you re-edit your recycler post so they have links to the pages instead of BBCode - doesn't normally pose a problem, but in this case, it's preventing me from saving the webpage properly...

Cheers mate
