Hi everyone

As some of you may have been aware I've been having a lot of problems with my Barcrest Rich & Famous real-life full size fruit machine (see threads: Rich & Famous acting funny and Reset RAM?)

I've had a lot of feedback on these two threads (thank you Adam, BarcrestBenito and MartinMEU) and managed to successfully get the fruit machine working better than it has been.

Without ditching the fruit machine (or throwing it off a cliff which I believe is illegal), I'm just asking if anyone knows how to reset the VTP's and the long term memory as the machine is playing very weird (it's been like this since I bought it two weeks ago from an amusement arcade).

It keeps allowing you on the board with very minimum ease and keeps giving lots of massive wins for just one pound (it's only a £5.00 JP!).

The long term percentage shows: 338.0% (even though the actual is 82% - thanks Adam for helping out with this one !)

I believe the RAM or whatever got corrupted and is running a weird program because of this corrupted percentage change !!

I hope someone out there knows a lot about MPU4 boards or Barcrest machines.

I've tried alsorts but to no avail :

o locating the battery to short it (not good idea so didn't bother)

o locating the battery to change it (nothing wrong with battery - it remembers credit inserted from previous day)

o taking out the program board and turning the machine on (no activity occurring until board re-inserted)

o fiddling with different combinations of DIP switches (just usual stuff e.g., percentage change, payout on open door, Scottish coin handling, etc)

o locating the prize/stake key to take out, switch on and off, put back in, switch on (there isn't a prize/stake key - it's on a chip on the program board)

o resetting the short term memory only (makes no difference to play over time - e.g., £50 in)

If anyone else has any ideas, please post them on this thread

Thank you very much for your efforts and time everyone

I'm confident we'll get this good old fruit machine to work !!

Basically just to confirm that resetting the VTP is done by holding 'cancel' while stepping through the VTP - should bleep to confirm and / or display a message.

Thats all I have to say, I hope you get this sorted out as it seems you've had an unlucky start in machine ownership :(

Best of luck,

Hi BB

thanks for post !

Yes I know - my luck with getting this fruit machine to work properly is wearing a bit thin !!!!

The cancel button whilst flicking through the VTPs only applies to the short-term memory logs I'm afraid.

The long-term (or locked) log is locked unfortunately and can't be cleared like the short-term log can using this method :(

It's the locked log (or whatever it is) that needs to be cleared as well (if that's at all possible) as the locked percentage is 338%

sorry mate !

we'll get there I'm sure !

Jason

from barcrest service manual.

"In the case when the memory requires to be cleared, for example of unwanted credit the following procedure should be followed.

1. switch machine on with doors closed

2. open a door

3. switch off machine

4. close door

5. switch machine on.

some parts of memory cannot normally be cleared, for example long term metering. these can only be reset by running a memory clear program module".

if you have a different program module you could try plugging that in to see if it has any effect, this does work on barcrest video machines(mpu4)
'cos I just tried it!

Hi BD

I know this one - it says it will clear the credits if you turn on/off three times in a five minute period.

Unfortunately I do not have another program card to try (good idea though - may work).

It's the long-term (locked) memory that I need to clear - it's corrupted !

Perhaps someone has another program card that I could try or knows where I can buy one (perhaps another Rich & Famous program card!!!)

Cheers

Jason

Have you tried emailling Barcrest? [not me, the manufacturer!]

They can't sell spares to the general public, but can offer advice sometimes, worth a shot!

:D Hello y'all! I just joined this website recently and mebbe i can be of help. I'm a tech engineer with a company called leisurelink so mebbe i can be of some assistance!

The best way to clear the memory is by using a meter clear program module or alternatively you can put another program card in the machine and power it on for 30 secs.

Shorting out the battery does clear the ram but its not generally good practise as this can cause problems.

I have heard of people shorting out the proms whilst in the machine to clear the ram, this is defo not a good idea and an easy way to knacker your psu and mpu and can also corrupt the proms.

If i can be of any help then giz a buzz

Thanks Impact

If any body out there can get one of these and is willing to either sell / loan the unit (just to reset the RAM, etc) to me, please let me know as I still can't play my fruit machine until this is fixed.

I don't know where the battery is located to short it (risk I'm willing to take also to get my fruitie to work) if anyone has any suggestions - I'm guessing it's inside the MPU4 board casing (I'll have to remove this with a special screwdriver somehow).

thanks again people

Thanks impact, but decided that after looking at my other thread (battery shorting) that I'd be best advised to leave the battery-shorting alone not being an electronics mechanic / engineer.

I'd probably cause long-term permanent damage.

Cheers for your help anyway

....didn't do my computer any good when I did that sort of stuff....bye bye new 512mb ddr400, bye bye 2.4GHz Athlon XP, bye bye 550W Dual fan PSU...you get the picture!

It may not cause any real problems, AS LONG AS THE MACHINE IS UNPLUGGED FROM THE WALL - but its ultimately down to how you feel doing it. Previous owner of my Cluedo just cut the battery clean off!!

Thanks BB

Well, it's clear from what you're saying - DON'T DO IT !!!!!

I can't get in to the MPU4 unit anyway to do it.

I've decided to go down the Program Card approach - I've seen an item on Ebay - hopefully a different Program Card inserted in to my fruit machine should do the trick.

Does anybody know if I put a different program card into my Rich and Famous (both MPU4) that it would spin the reels, go to the features, etc just the same or would it damage my fruit machine.

The program card in question is 'Crystal Maze' which is a very similar game.

Your thoughts please !!!!

yes you're safe plugging a different card in,I used to use my mpu3 and mpu4 machines like a snes or megadrive, changing cards, adding reelbands and altering lamp positions to match, things are so much easier since fruit machine emulation started! unfortunately for you I gave everything I had(program cards, reelbands, wiring diagrams)to the emu game developers.

Thanks for the reply Dave

I'll go ahead and try and obtain a different program card then from somewhere (where I don't know yet)

Kind regards

Aw,

thanks Mikey !

I hope you can get one - that's extremely kind and thoughtful of you.

I would endeavour to get it back to you the moment I've reset the RAM, etc...

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks again mate

Hey Mikey - you work for LeisureLink dontcha....so...

How much for Spiker the Biker £5 decals?

BarcrestBenito.

P.S] I was wondering if running the MPU4 without a card in for a period of time would clear the RAM - but it would probably just melt some components so dont try it!

well everyone - I've managed to reset the RAM (including the Long-term memory).

The amusement arcade I bought it from managed to send me another MPU4 program card and this has done the trick
