I have been a member of the site for about 6 months and have downloaded may layouts. If a layout is a classic DX or WDX etc I know what I am gonna get but I am clueless as to what DX, WDX stands for.....

ok a dx is just the machine and a wdx is a machine with some sort of side art or pic
if i am wrong someone will put me right

Its never been explained to me but on using my grey cells...those that aren't drink sodden...i came to the premise that it stood for deluxe, as there was the classic and then the deluxe version..and wide deluxe..

This could be totally off the mark, but life is to short to really be worring about it.......live lfe and enjoy each days as if it was your last...one day it will be.... Now go and enjoy playing these great DeluXe Layouts

Thanks for that flyer. It is not the type of layout I am unsure of it is the meaning of the initials... I assume the 'W' from WDX is wide......

Classic is a bare bones layout using minimum if any real artwork. The emulators are great tools as you can create a working and recognisable layout of a machine without using any art.

A DX contains real images of a specific machine. This was the only alternative to a classic layout. Photo's, flyers and even drawn artwork would be added to the emulation to add realism. In the early days, classics were the only versions that would work on my slow PC. A DX is as close as you will get to the real machine. Well, unless you go out to find it litterally.

WDX's were window DX's. I think Pook started the origional WDX with some teriffic early MPU4 machines like ActionBANK and CashCOUNTER. I've seen more and more recently that WDX tend to represent layouts with sideart so the term WDX could have changed meaning over the years.

PDX stands for 'Pseudo DX' This is litterally a layout that has been created with
out the origional artwork/photo or flyer. Sometimes theres no form or art to identify the machine, or in some cases, a layout that has alternative artwork somewhat different to the layouts origional art. Theres a lot of machine roms available and sometimes theres no artwork available to create a DX so some designers create their very own personal layout. Like my 'Cash MATRIX' layout from a few months ago. In this case, we can create suitable art ourselves. The odd couple of machines have had alternative artwork produced for them even though theres a true DX. Sometimes its something that gives a layout designer a little more of a challenge.

That is really imformative although I am still a little unsure... If WDX is for Windows DX then is DX related to hardware the emulation will run on? You talk of your old hardware only running classics...

If not then I am still unsure of what DX means....

i don't think he means it only runs on the windows os but rather the layout is displayed in a window rather than full screen.

WDX = window DX that runs in a non full screen window.

HDX = hybrid DX

PDX = pseudo

DX = deluxe as stated..

i came to the premise that it stood for deluxe, as there was the classic and then the deluxe version..and wide deluxe..

RB has a good point with the deluxe theory although I assumed wide for 'W' but this maybe 'Window'

krazyivan, I was not considering OS, more architecture.... I am sure I used to own a DX66.... long time ago though...

Going back to RB - How right you are that life is too short but if we don't ask we don't learn and I am interested.... I won't lose sleep though....
