Hello guys, i gues the name of this thread gives things away, today i overstepped what i thought was a controlled habit. I played roullette only to lose, began chasing my loses only to lose more, then decided i would use my rent money to chase even more, lost even more, was standing outside the bookies then came up with the brainwave that i would play the new £70 Little Devil at my local....bad idea. After maybe another £70-80 nothing....nothing.....NOTHING. So i know find myself in the situation of having let my 2 kids down and lying to my wife why i haven't a penny to my name. I know to some its not alot of money but to me it was all the world, i realise that i was the one risked the gambles, but i stand now a broken man seeking advice on how to rid myself of this terrible addiction i have to gambling. Can someone please give me advice, the hot lines just don't work for me, please help

:skeptical: if your wife & kids aint enough for you to kick the habit i dont know what anyone can say that will make you see sense:err:, i use to have a major gambling habit but i kicked it years ago and now only play the emulations i download from here, if it meant putting a meal in my kids belly or feeding the machines well obviously my kids come first! :idea:me thinks through experience you will only give up when you are ready but i hope you dont lose your wife & kids first!
good luck

A simple way i cured mine was to let the missus control the money to avoid temptation.

its the worst feeling in the world, stopped it years ago but i still know all the feelings, when your ploughing cash into machines your mrs and kids are far from your thoughts, you just want the cash back you have lost.which is crazy."if only i hadnt played in the first place" and having to lie about it.dont want to be pescimistic but took me near enough 20 years to finally learn.simplisticly why are these things there, they produce more revenue than horses and greyhounds put together.only advice is to realise what you have before its too late.no one needs to play fruities or roulette.good luck pal.

Horror stories like that are not uncommon in my life..well at least in my younger days where i woud lose all my dosh on the £4.80 token machines..£60 or 70 in them days was a helluva load of dosh..although in them days i had no commitments..staying with my mum,no kids etc and my girlfriend would bail me out time and time again so i could pay my dig money and have ciggies for the rest of the week.

I'll be the 1st to hold my hand up and say im still an addict and i 'fall off the wagon' now and again..spose im fortunate to have such an understanding missus in the fact that i get called every name under the sun when it happens but all is forgotten about a few days later..spose she thinks she knows she married me knowing what she was getting herself into and the odd indescretion is forgivable.

The way i deal with it is to not put myself in temptations way..she has my bank card 99% of the time and the times i have it i just dont go near the local town centre where the arcades are or i have just enough money to get what i need to get and thats it.

Its not easy..its never gonna be easy once an addict always an addict IMO but you have to take yourself out of situations where you know there is gonna be a chance that you 'could' or 'might' go and play the fruitys.
Mmmmmm...Sandy ive 'ad her ye know. :)

Been there myself, but i still find myself losing, last sunday was the worst for a long time. Cant remember what i lost on though? luckily it was just a one off. Anyway there are always self-exclusion forms you could fill out to prevent you for going into places like these if you want to.

When i gamble like casino, bookies, arcades, pubs, etc i go down there with a amount what im set to lose so b4 i go out i can say to my self im £50 down already so if i do lose im not pissed off, if i win its a bonus. But i do understand some people don't no when to stop, im no pro in this area of gambling but think of your family, im sure if u put your mind to it, it will help u stop.

yep its very hard to get out of the rut i personally moved away from the local arcades with a 5 mile bus journey to the nearest one i eventually lost interest ..i think after the event the feeling is terrible i used to be on proper downers..however after a few days the feeling goes and before long i was wishing for the next visit but it was always the same feeling afterwards....there is only one that really can help you and thats yourself, think of the good things that your wife/kids could of done with that money.instead you lined the arcade owner with enough money to have a weeks holiday in the sun while you skrimp and borrow to get a loaf of bread so your kids can have a slice of toast for brekky....think.....nobody was more addicted than i was every penny went in machines i still play them but only on very rare occasions ive learnt my lesson any one can stop if they really want to but thats the key YOU HAVE TO WANT TO STOP its just the same as smoking WILLPOWER choose between your family OR gambling i know what i would pick every time,do you ???????????

true, you have to want to stop.

Ask the arcade/bookmakers to self exclude you.

Hi, you have made the first steps on the road to recovery by admitting you have a problem. You need to make all money as transparent as possible so you have no chance of getting a crafty tenna on the machines. Have you looked at the gamblers anon web site? It has a live chat and can be very helpful, also try the ga meetings they are very good but can be very strict. I know just how you feel so i wish you good luck in the long journey ahead of you.

Yes would agree with that in my darkest moments i told no one about my addiction was just spooling one lie after the other trying to cover up my mistakes and losses. Until i told the missus she went up the wall when i told her what i'd been spending, then we came up with a plan that she run all the money coming in and i would just have money for the things i realy needed, so that would stop the temptation was hard at first trying to find an excuse to go on the fruitys but i'm getting there now hardly ever play now and if i do they are token or 2p play machines. So that way it's fun and not trying to make loads of money off em so you wont be tempted to chase your losses.

I got self exclusions from all of the arcades in my town and the town where i work apart from a nobles for 1 year. Nearly up now.. Haven't had an urge for a while now and only pop into nobles on a Monday morning and get £10 of free tokens on the early bird thing they do...

In a month i only spend around £20 where before it used to be at least £500 a month...

No point in posting here, full of gamblers etc and in all honesty £167 is nothing compared to what most have lost.

Grow some backbone and don't touch the machines... Some people don't have the willpower to do this.

...it is possible to literally walk away from addictions, I have in the past... Well done you :) But not everyone finds it this easy.

...prove to yourself when you think your cured by popping in a £1 and just walking away without pushing the button. Ridiculous advice, and a total waste of a quid as well. Don't even THINK about doing this if you are trying to give up gambling.

Play the emu games inside out to understand how crooked these games are. Yes

DO NOT join any online Casino's apart from the one here. Don't join any at all, INCLUDING this one.

I don't agree with that One H!

I (on a sad personal note) totally agree with that!

Not a member and i'm glad to say i've never seen nor heard of it!

I go to a Bingo hall weekly, and several years ago I pumped these machines no-end...I play Bingo and have a beer and look at the people playing the machines thinking "Okayyy!"

My Bingo is a social night and the bet is pre-determined (as in a weekly Lotto ticket) and I know I will have 4 Pints of the finest Fosters:skeptical:

I'm no 'Gambler' (its social) as in lose my balls (as mabey you suggest?).....FME for me is a hobby...in fact bar the odd Tenner (mabey less than that in the past month) I rarely play machines, been to a bookies 5 times in my life and can't remember my last visit to an arcade and on-line anything is nowt.....

FME can be fun H, and you are fully aware some here see it the same way.

Good advice there mate. I noticed you said the please help. The bottom line is no amount of help and advice is going to work for you unless you learn to help yourself first.Find out where your local ga meeting is and give it a try.The meetings are ran by compulsive gamblers like you and me and im sure you will meet people who really have crossed the line and lost everything. Its good, free and simple advice which can change your life if you really want to stop. Look on the ga website to find out where your nearest meeting is.If you get stuck send me a message and i can tell you where, as i have a list and contacts within the ga organisation.Good luck

Ady, what I meant is we are all gamblers in one way or another and probably not best to help people.

We've also probably thrown a lot more then £167 away and would probably wish we'd only thrown that away.

With regards to that site, it's actually a therapy site that people can join with support groups to help you kick the habit. I truely believe that if you got to a position where you can drop a coin in a machine and walk away, your cured!

With regards to playing the emu, this is also a good life lesson on how crooked these machines are - well worth playing some inside and out to show you'll never win.
