Does anyone have the programming box for the ol' Smiley?
I've connected my NV4 upto a serial port to put the new currency data in (I have the software and the note defs from Innovative) - but I get an 'error 7'.
The COM port's tested okay, so all I can surmise is that the Programming Box must actually do something, other than pass the serial signals to the NV4.
£5s and £10s test out fine, but £20s reject (as I'd expect).
I could manually teach it the new £20s, but a) I've not worked out the pin-outs to get that done yet and I'd rather use "real" currency data.
All help much appreciated.

Here I am again, replying to my own posts.... but I thought I'd post what I've found out so far.
The NV4 can, allegedly be programmed directly, using the PC. Certain firmwares of NV4 CANNOT be taught with notes, you can only teach with currency downloads from the manufacturer.
To connect to a PC, you use the 5 pin connector, not the 15 pin.
Pin 1 - +12VDC
Pin 2 - 0V / GND
Pin 3 - NC
Pin 4 - RX
Pin 5 - TX
Then there is some ambiguity in what happens next. Some say that Pin 15 (on the 15pin) has to be held low (to ground) to program. Others say that Pins 3 & 8 need to be linked to force the unit into SSP mode to program. Neither (nor a combination) work for me.
Do any of the engineers on here have any experience of programming NV4 without using a DA1 or equivalent - i.e. just by connecting the NV4 directly to RS232?
(apparently a DA1 just takes the serial lines from the 15pin header (1 and 5) and converts them to/from TTL levels using a MAX232 IC, but the 5 pin header is already at the right levels).
Really could use some help, as I need to take £20 notes!!

You *CAN* program your NV4 Note Acceptor using a PC and serial port, with no dongles, or anything else.
1) Regsiter at www.innovative-technology.co.uk and download the Currency Manager software, and the latest note 'definitions'
2) Connect your NV4 as follows:
On the 5pin connector:
1 - +12V
2 - 0V
3 - N/C
4 - Serial RX
5 - Serial TX
On the 15pin connector:
3 - 8 Linked
15 - 0V
3) Switch the machine into TEACH mode.
4) Power-cycle and verify that LEDS 1 & 4 are steadily lit. If not, start again.
5) Load the Currency Manager software, load the note file you downloaded (after unzipping) and download it to the note acceptor (takes about 30secs)
6) Exit the software
7) Reboot the Note Acceptor.
(obviously then, you'll refit it to your machine, and be pleased at the recognition rate of your newly updated smiley!)

Quality information there, cheers! Sounds pretty complicated to do but I suppose that once you set your mind to it, it can be done with a bit of thought

I did it with a USB - Serial adapter on Windows 7, using pieces of cable pushed over the pins - I didn't even make up a 'real' cable to do it. (not that I'd recommend doing it this way, but it did the job!)
It's really a lot more simple than I've written - read through the guide a few times first, so you know what's coming next, and you'll be fine.
There's a guy offering reprogramming of NV4s on ebay for £8 + P&P I think, so this should save people £8 + P&P at least.

Tried this way today with a RS323 cable and a 12V dc adaptor but it didnt work at all.
What exactly does port 3 N/C mean? i guess that means Not Connected so i left it not connected.

Hello!
Does this work finally?
I connected everything but does not work for me
The validator is powered 12V both the 5-pin connector and the 15pin?
serial port GND is connected? Where?
I get the LEDs 1 and 4 on, but the program does not connect, I have the newest program I do not know if it is valid for NV4
Do you have old programs?
Thank you!

really old post i know sorry, and chances of a reply are slim.
does anyone still have the software needed for these to reprogram them, the website no longer supports the nv4 and i cannot find the software or latest note file anywhere.
thank you
