Can anyone recommend, pref free, lol, a programme for the above which will also conver to 'avi' format whilst doing so.

Or any other ways of doing it.

You have to bear in mind that I'm VERY new to this and possibly a bit thick.

Hi, Search 4 a program called DVD Decrypter, this program is free and can rip most if not all DVD's, u can store the file in (I think) 3 formats, the best being ISO, then download a program called MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD manager, this will create virtual CD/DVD drives, so that you can then play the ISO's of the DVD's ripped.. job done..

Will this let me burn them onto discs?

Dont do a lot of burning now that i have my Media Centre..although when i did i used Nero.

Depending on the format you have downloaded the movie (usually.avi) in or whatever it has to be converted to a format your DVD player will recognise..uless your DVD player can play .avi files..in which case you can burn them straight to disc.(i think)

You can have a look through some of this software maybe try a couple out and see which is the best and easiest to use.

Had a look but i ain't got a clue what i'm doing, surely there's a prog that's made for idiots, ie simple to use and you can do it in 1 step without having to rip dvd then convert into seperate avi's and then splice them together, or is that just wishful thinking............... ps i DID say i was thick lol

Like i said..im not really the man that knows a lot about this stuff..i knew the basics..and more often than not i would end up making a coaster.

Chasnbons, the DVDDecrypter can also write DVD's just there is an option called 'Mode@, in there select ISO (2 options select the 2nd option 'W') this will change the program screen display and indicate that u can burn from HD to DVD... it is very straight 4ward and although I haven't as yet burned a DVD, I have read that it works a treat...

my method is very close to some of the above - i rip using DVDDECRYPTOR, thiws is a great program for making a perfect ISO and it also takes the regional protection off aswell as the CCS copy protection.

now i use uleadvideostudio 10 to port the dvd chapters in and save them as windows files, typically .mpg (you dont want to be saving a dvd as a .avi file!)

if i do need to conver mpg to avi ive always loaded them into adobe premiere, this way i can trim anything needed and then i have a whole host of export formats, including uncompressed avi files.

i use a legit program called DVDFab. its great for ripping dvds and blu-ray to all kinds of sources.

i use it to rip stuff to my ps3, or media center.

it makes perfect copys of dvds or blu-ray disks and you can export to many file formats

BUT

doing it the DVD Decrypter way is also very good.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their help.

Think I'm sorted now, although it's probably a long way round at least it's something I can do without getting confused.

I'm using DVDFab6, and OJOSoft Total Video Converter and they seem to be doing what I need so all's good.
