You lost.
It just didn't want to pay.
Break it down........
You're on a Rainbow Riches, you got £20 and you play it through and get no win. But, how can the machine display that you have no win?
Well, it could spin 4 reels full of jackpot symbols and then have none on reel 1 or 2, and therefore that's no win.
Or, it could spin in a bunch of random J Q K symbols which will also pay nothing.
Likewise, on your machine, it could offer SOME trail helds, SOME bonuses etc, but the fact will still stand that during that £20 you will get NO chance at the board. This time however, it's given you nothing to play on, but the fact still stands as above, no chance of getting on the board.
Remember, the % in and out is the focus of a machine.
The reels and flashing lights are merely a facade that expresses what the machine wants to pay.

Welcome to the future of fruit machines. It's not entertainment any more it's a easy way for them to make money. And for that reason i quit!

iv experienced that many times on machines, no bonus, no chance to win a thing even after putting £20+ into it, which either means its been emptied or the payout % has been paid by a marginal scale and so a fair bit would need to be played into it to level it back into playing out
the only exception is with £5jp machines. The "Top Gears" fruit machine thats in our bowling centre used to play well, maybe put you on the board every 10 spins, but somehow 1 day that changed completely and has never been the same since. Instead now it gives you nothing for maybe £2-£3, if you get bonus it gives boost to 1 below feature entry, normal spins give nothing, but every now and again it gives superhold which can get you up, once up you are basically guaranteed £5, i remember it raping me outta £6+ then i got on the board, it payed repeat jackpot, then a few more quid later superhold again which put me up and got another £4

Unlucky dingleclaret, sounds like you walked on at the wrong time. Probably best having limited it to £20 to be honest. Nothing wrong with Can U Dig it? I've seen it do £100 on the top followed by a £70 shot £10 later and then it was still happy, giving the £10 cash etc 25p stake tends to be stingy with trail helds, 50p would have given you a bonus, £1 gives guaranteed repeat on the repeat cash values.

I would of thought this would be the norm for a £70 jp machine in a pub if you caught it at the wrong time.

shITBOX .... It's a cnut in a box!!!
PP = SOAP/(IS + SOAP) ... assumes all payouts ploughed back into machine
IS = Initial Stake
SOAP = Sum Of All Payouts
PP = Percentage Payout
For you ...
IS = £20
SOAP = £0
=> PP = 0%
PP = SOAP/(IS + SOAP) ... assumes all payouts ploughed back into machine
IS = Initial Stake
SOAP = Sum Of All Payouts
PP = Percentage Payout
For you ...
IS = £20
SOAP = £0
=> PP = 0%
He who wrestles with a turd will be beshitted whether he fall under it or over it.

You saying he doesnt spend any money on soap?
OK he might have lost £20, but I wouldn't say he needs a wash over that.

% is caculated over every £1000 going though the machine, not on the £20 added whilst playing.

There are ways to play these, the problem is though, even if a machine is behind percentage, it should at least offer small wins every now and then. Not giving boards for £20-£30 is just going to drive the casual punter away from AWPs.

couldnt agree more, 1 big loss with nothing offered is going to put your average punter off that machine for good,
a few offers of small amounts would be better, since it would give the player something to play for and keep them happy (even if they dont profit from it)
pubs may be cashing in bigtime with the £70jp machines, however, at the moment the average players are losing for the usual "pro" players to rape the jackpot, however if this pattern continues the average players will be staying away from thoese machines, thus the "pro"'s wont bother with them since it wont have enough in it to pay jackpot, and profits will drop
