My sister has a problem like this on her netbook. We are not sure what the problem is though. The netbook in question is a Acer Aspire. We formated the netbook but that had no effect on the issue. The netbook is running Linux. The only way we got around this was to connect an external moniter - not exactly ideal as it takes away the portability of the netbook, but at least it still works.

Its an Acer...question answered ??
Seriously though..this happened to a m8's PC when he killed his gfx when he electro-static shocked it.
If you havent had your craptop open then i dont spose that would come into the equation..could still be a problem with the gfx though..dont know tbh as ive not had much experience working on the inside of craptop.
If its still under warranty take it back to the shop..and if the guy asks whats wrong with it..just reply.."Yeah mate...its an Acer" he will understand.

possibly the connecting wire the puts the display on the screen has become damaged/broken. It would be able to cause something like this as the signal going to the screen wouldn't display the screen properly, due to the damage. Try replacing that piece and the try

Does it do it from the moment you turn the laptop on ?
If it does then you have a loose or broken "flexi-cable" that connects the screen to the system board.
This was also a common problem on the early dell latitudes that can be resolved by reconnecting the cable - if the cable is snapped then it's a new screen !
If it only does it in windows then you could suggest the driver is at fault but i would expect it to be more the above issue based on the screenshots.
Also does it do the same when you hook it up to an external monitor ? this will prove whether it's the gfx card or screen...

I had this problem on my Toshiba laptop when i had it, before i got a new laptop, the problem was being with the graphics card inside the laptop itself which might of deconfigured or moved slightly and the screen panel inside the laptop might of got nudged or moved slightly by either 1) slamming the laptop together 2) dropping the laptop 3) not knowing you had things inside the laptop and closing the lid 4) it is old and might need a new monitor panel or graphics card.

We need to know if this happens as soon as you power it on, or if it happens when you get to your desktop....
If it happens at power on, then it will be deffo a hardware fault, but if it only happens when you reach your desktop, it will almost be likley to be a driver fault.
One way to find out, is if you can boot into safe mode, and see if it happens then.
if it's ok in safe mode, then it confirms a driver fault.

No one 100% knows, which is why it's a good idea to follow through what I previously mentioned, so we know 100%, if the fault is either hardware, or driver related.

Deffo hardware fault then..... not looking good.
Think it would be best to fit it up to an external monitor, and see if the display outputs ok on that.
If this is so, then the fault would point to a possible screen fault, to which you will need expert help with, as the fault in this case could be either wiring related, controller, or actual LCD screen fault.
If however, you get pretty much the same output on an external screen, then the on-board gfx is shagged, and in this case, I'm sorry to say the lappy is basically scrap, unless you can find a cheep mainboard for it on e-bay.

The best place for him to take it is to a nearby computer shop and letting them know what is wrong with it and then he knows what the best idea/plan to do is as they will know what might cause it or what has happened.

And then some spotty saturday assistant makes him part with £450 to buy a new laptop when all it needed was a simple case off and reconnect. :s :s
It's always best to take it to "a friend that knows" rather than a shop. after all a shop is only out to do one thing which is make money..
If you dont have a friend that knows then use a forum like this to get other experts advice, myself i have14 years experience in IT, have multiple microsoft certifications and a handfull of cisco certifications - So if between the rest of us we cant sort it out then the problem is not fixable !!!
