Yes but its a precaution. Have you seen the airt crash investigation where the plane nearly crashes after all 4 engines die after going thru an ash cloud? i agree it looks like we have barely been hit but would you want to take the risk? I certainly wouldn't. Jet engines + volcanic ash do not mix.

Yeah I watched that not long back. I can see the point but why close the south down also, its not anywhere near there yet. Also its very high up much higher than planes fly.

Lot of our running club members were meant to be flying to Boston today for the marathon on Monday. Insurance are not paying up either because it's an "act of God". Will they pay anyone back for saying they're athiest? If not, just use the insulting my faith discrimination talk with em? lol...Hope they do make it out in the end, or it's a lot of money they spent on NOTHING.

Not really rob, the ash is carried via the Jetstream (much above our weather)...Alrines use the jetstream to their advantage as its pretty reliable to say the least and they do fly in it.

Also, if i'm not mistaken, its so fine its not picked-up by normal radar? (learned that from the TV program mentioned earlier) so's a much bigger danger.

So they finally opened up the airspace over the UK after about a week.

I think this was under pressure from the airline companies who were probably losing 'millions' every day thier planes werent in the sky.

According to the news last night i got the impression NATS had said..well do it if you want to its not our responsibilty if anything happens.

Wouldnt fancy being on the first plane that took to the skies again would you. ?

Pilot.."Good morning ladies and gentlemen..were gonna be taking off in about 5 minutes flying in a southwesterly direction..climbing to 37,000ft..weather conditions are good apart from that big cloud of ash that 'isnt there' anymore..and we "should" be ok but if ye see the engines on fire you will know why..sit back and enjoy the flight".

Ermmm....:undecided:
