it needs a new disc drive mate common fault along with the rrod its an easy fix to those in the know .there are 4 diff types of drive you cant change them without voiding the warranty.if you are doing a diy.the easiest way is to open xbox see which drive it is(hitachi,samsung,benq,or philips liteon)the latter two being the most popular.buy the same drive off ebay ect.they are quite cheap now, the only thing to change is the pcb board you need to use the original one from your old drive otherwise it wont work.if you have any knowledge soldering this job will be very easy you only need to desolder and resolder 7 wires i car run you through the procedure if you want to do it yourself.the picture shows what you need to desolder then resolder
red=solder
blue=ribbon conectors
sorry this one lol

oddly enough saynowt mate its actually a benq drive thats in the console,in frustration iu gave the bloody thing a whack just above the drive as a disc had got stuck.i switched the console off and back on again and the disc read perfectly.
i took the disc out and rebooted the 360 and got the error again. could it be something to do with ther laser not calibarating properly or a dirty laser even ?

i have had problems with the laser with scratched dvd discs the laser was trying to read the dvd but got stuck right back i had to open the xbox and push the laser back to the middle after that it was ok.till the next time lol i replaced the drive in the end i think you will have to do the same it isnt hard to change really easy if you have a soldering iron..

I’ve no experience with Xbox but I’ve serviced many disc drives.
Typically the micro/cpu has to be informed of the position of the tray and this can be achieved by small switches. As the tray closes fully the contacts on the switch are opened or closed depending on the design. This is detected by the micro and it then stops the loading motor. If no information is received it will believe the tray still to be open.
Because you said it worked when you gave it a “WHACK”it might be worth checking the switches for poor contacts.
Other problems giving similar results can be worn loading belts and tyres on front loaders causing the disc not to be fully loaded and often locks up with the disc stuck.
Like I said I don’t know the detection used in the xbox, it may use a non physical method like opto couplers or led, but thought it might be helpful.

The laser is on its way out or just needs a good clean.
If you have a missus she most likely has some nail varnish remover and some cotton buds, give it a good clean with that then wipe dry.
If no joy then you need a mulitmeter set to 20k ohms and bring the reading of the laser down so it increases the power.
The Benq/Liteon drive lasers have easy markings on them so you know what is the CD and DVD pot with a C and D next to the Pot.
You just need to bring the reading down small steps at a time them measure before and after so you know where you are then test each time.
