It has come to my attention that a good friend has just been busted for downloading a film from a torrent site. a letter arrived on his door step from a solicitor warning of court action if the sum of some £700 was not paid.

the letter indeed detailed the download file he acquired from BT junkie, and went on to explain that he should delete the file immediately and that if £700 was not paid then court action would follow.

Whilst the letter was real, has anybody else had or heard of letters like this, and am i right in thinking that the said person should not have to pay, as the IP address only goes to a house, and doesnt pinpoint who exactly downloaded the program. i pointed out that you could argue the file was corrupt and un-usable? would that stick in court?

I have seen loads of these and the best advice is never to pay. They just connect to a swarm get a all the ip's and send letters to all the addresses hoping that someone will panic and pay the fee.

This is a standard thing that the mappa does now.

Tell your friend not to worry and just tell him to join a private tracker and to use ghost ip.

Hope this helps

The following will be of help....

Davenport Lyons and ACS:Law, one and the same, and they just love to try strong arming folks in to paying up through bully boy tactics.

New piece here @ El Reg....

http://www.theregist...withstand_ddos/

BTW, they BOTH just got the shite DDoS'd out of them.

The following is a good EG what BS these monkeys get up to, and how to tackle them.....

http://www.digitalsp...d.php?t=1028774

Basic advice seams to be..... ignore the letters, they are just trying to put the squeeze on to you, similar tricks as used by these ambulance chaser law firms.

Hi there, i would not pay mate as others have said these groups will download a file and snatch all the ip's they then send letters out to scam money out of people.

I have been downloading about 200-300 gigs every m onth for about 3 years now and have never had any probs..

The safest way i would say mate is join a private tracker as most of these public ones wil cause you hassle one way or another..

If allowed i will pass a few invites over to people but i dont have mega amounts of them...

If you do require an invite send me a message and i will see what i can sort for you..

Deny all knowledge, claim someone used your internet, say sat outside your house on your wifi, and its up to them to prove otherwise.

Fkin right...£700 ?? Jeeeziz fkk that seems like outright extortion to me..and yeah there is no way they can prove WHO downloaded it..so if someone makes a hoax phone call from your landline it needs to be you that done it ?

Not true anymore. The Digital Millenium Act (or something like that!) made the owner/billpayer of the BB connection liable for everything that is downloaded using that connection, even if it had been hacked. The act says its up to the owner to make sure all the security features are in place.
If you search Digital Spy there is at least one thread that goes into the details of it all, I have very limited knowledge.

Hmmmm...spose they could argue that "the buck stops at you" your broadaband..your responsibilty to make sure whos using it or not...still seems well unfair though.

Any programme that has ghost ip in it.

There is a few good ones floating around where they bounce your ip off of servers all over the world so they csn never pin point you.

The only downside to these are, most private trackers dont allows these programmes for security reasons, but if you are using a public tracker defo load one.

Search the net and im sure you will find a good tutorial on how to install and active it.

install the program and then install the crack over the .exe original
