just thought id ask for a lil help.
my cousin gave me his laptop casue its broke (it wont recharge) so i opened it up and found that the wires to the charger jack were broken off so i got out my trusty soldering iron and soldered the back on.
now it recharges the battery and works but a bigger problem has arisen. when i power on it shows the post screen but the display is red and when windows starts up there is a red tint on the display.
i figure that the ribbon from the back of the monitor to the mainboard is faulty (possibly a loose wire or two).
i need to know if anyone knows where i can get a replacement ribbon (or if anyone has a knackered aspire 5535 they want to give away lol).
any help much appreciated.

If your certain the cable is faulty I would be tempted to buy new and not used like the one on ebay. There is every chance that if these cables are subject to stress and wear then a second hand one could have a short life.

Red tint is faulty CCFL tubes that are on the way out. you cant really replace them that easily so buy a new LCD panel but 1st test it isnt the GFX chip by plugging it into an external monitor.
Experience with LCD screens tells me that a faulty cable usually just leads to a white or corrupted screen and not just single colour
Also my mums dell inspiron did it and then the screen goes blank, new LCD panel sorted it.

thanks for your reply drmad2004
i have plugged in an external monitor and is displayed properly on the external monitor.
when i move the ribbon cable slightly whilst the laptop is turned on the screen flikers with white lines all over the place then when i stop touching the cable the white lines dissapear but the screen stays red. i haved ordered an new ribbon cable from the acer website so when that arrives ill pop it in and see if that resolves the problem. if it dosnt i may have to change the actual connection on the motherboard that the ribbon cable plugs into.
but i hope not cause that a delicate operation and requires some good steady hand and really thin soldering.
cheers

Well in that case it could be the cable and the screen but its right to go for the cheaper option 1st as I did with mums laptop inverter then screen.
If the cable does not sort it then I would try for a new LCD next and not mess with the connectors unless they look suspect.
Look on ebay for the part number of your screen and also what that model laptops that fits, then search that laptop type for screens you can come up with alternate compatible screens that will work. Or just search the size/resolution. I found a decent used one for £30.
