I spoke to Duplu the other day SB about this.

I suggested we used capture but apparently its already used.

If you look in the abyss you can see todd and I have been busy, each One of those also has an IP ban...but they just move on.

Mabey someone (me or you?) suggest to Duplu that new members need approval before posting is allowed...there's always One of us around so new members won't have to wait long.

Sounds good to me mate - I will send him a PM now. :)

It's just annoying having to trawl through their shit posts when looking around.

Cheers. :)

I agree with that Johnny... those aksing without reading up first annoy me almost as much as the spamming threads that get started.

I certainly agree with membership approval first. Also to let real members joining fo the first time that they must read up on the rules and information about the emulators and layouts before posting asking for this, that and the other, without doing any research first.

I know (well I can certainly remember when I joined FME forums - everything was everywhere then) it can be daunting when you first join, but there is a lot more help out there with suggestions and information on FME than there was when we joined and it only takes a bit of time to get the gist of things, so let them start using their braincells and try to figure out things for themselves - we had too!

Yes, membership aaproval seems the logical way to stop this spamming that seems to be happening on a very regular basis now - and also keep a track of some new members who aren't just here for wanting the impossible in FME! :)

I've been checking on the main Invision site (the software on which the site is built) and there has been a general spam problem on most sites since the start of the year. 99% of this spam is apparently coming from Russia. Invision has quite a good spam prevention engine built it but obviously this can't block everything.

I've made the spam filters higher so that more users will have to be manually authorised. I'll think about manually approving members but there are a couple of problems with it in that (a) I don't have the time to go through manually approving members (B) How do you spot a spammer simply from a username and e-mail address, as that is all you require to sign-up.

I might test the sign up approval tonight and see how annoying it gets and whether it is useful or not.

Was that bad at DAD's at one time, we now use a manual approval process, sometimes asking users to auth their account via an e-mail link, especially when we see non EU IP's

Fortunately, SMF can show whios info via the respective TLD like RIPE (Main EU TLD) on a direct link, and is that I use mostly to check IP's, especially when only an IP number is shown, over a given hostname information.

Yes, means the user can not access until their account is authorised, but it has cut out over 90% of the problems we have had at DAD's.
