I'd choose the 80's favourite HYPER VYPER.
"Exchange it For Nudges!"

thats a difficult one to answer as people have different tastes, but in my opinion for sheer playability and the chance to get some decent features and quite a few jackpots i would recommend the lower jp andy capp machines.
for example i made a £6 jp version of andy's great escape which i thought played a bloody good game.
also quite a few of the older barcrest games on a lower jp play rather nicely.
but whatever you do steer clear of the club machines as they can play dead for ages.

Barcrests 'Cash Counter' has to be my all time emulated machine. It has plenty of features AND a proper decent SKILL feature to advance yourself. 10p play £4 JP.
'Cash Matrix', 'Silver Shadow' and most other 10p or 20p £4 or £4.80JP machine are the best for gameplay. Download em. Try em out. They are the bast.

I like machines with good sound, i've put loads into machines just to get the satisfaction of hearing the jackpot music.
I just love the music of "The Mob"
"They been spending most their lives living in the gangsta's paradise"
"We keep spending most our lives living in the gangsta's paradise"
:electron: 8)

Club Psycho Cash Beast is the best in my opinion, playability is superb and the logo flashes for the jp, with lots of afters.

I used to love Sonic the Hedgehog, casino crazy, and pinball wizard. I always got the impression sonic let you on the board much more than other machines, albeit usually only for small win or to kill you straight away!

The best fruit machine I have played (not emulated yet) is Crazy Crocs.
Old Global 10p play - £3/£4 machine that uses Scorpion 2 tech.
Program roms we have. Sound we don't have.
Excellent machine. £10 could last you for ages with a good chance of a profit.
Brilliant features. Good chance at repeating as well from the Jackpot.
Who could ask for more from a fruit machine.

Sunset Boulevard is my fav.
Bangin Away, Jiggin In The Riggin for SFX, Bangin Away for playablilty too.
Club Fortune for an easier £200 jackpot.
Take Your Pick + Club are both great also.
Hit The Top, Cloud 999 and Blue moon are all great lo-techs.
Rat Race and Super Exchanges Unlimited are great machines.

This is quite difficult!
There are so many downloads of machines I haven't played in real life which have been very playable.
However when I come to recommend anything I find I am massively swayed towards machines I was hooked on as a youngster, even though they are very basic in the feature department. An example of this would be 'Each way Nudger' - I'm thrilled for hours in nostalga lane although im sure any newbie would be bored after the first jackpot!
This also goes for my personal favourite machine of all time - the unemulated 'Lite-a-nudge'. Basic numbers for nudges stuff - but I know I would have to take the day off just to play it when some god like figure emulates the system 80 tech and this rom. Hey-ho.
With you aware of this 'nostalga tint' - I would agree with the 'hyper viper' recommendation and add the similar styled 'Line-up' and 'adders and ladders'.
Although (suprise, suprise) 1980's machines - The basic concept of numbers on the reels pushing you around the feature board has yet to be beaten!
You don't need to 'access' the feature board (as in the usual - 3 feature symbols on the winline such as the still recommended 'las vegas strip' and alot of modern machines) and it makes every 'hold' - especially with a 'feature held' light an exciting event as you feverishly count along the board to see where you will land. (great I hold the 2 and the blank - as long as no number comes in I get 6 nudges - damn! a 3) - This should be enough for your son to take up swearing.
I also recommend the old 2p gobblers 'Rat Race' (try and find the rat for £1.50 - no chance - but you WILL try) and 'Spoof' - Great mid 80's machines that prove you can come up with 50 features that can always end up with a 4p win! Get the one that wins the 50p and you suddenly think you are Paul Newman fron 'The Sting'.

hyper viper was a sweet machine in it's day.
i'm suprised to see mention of silver shadow though.... that, and
several other machines - strike a light, razzle dazzle, autoroute
all had phases where they'd eat yer pennies and give only 20-40p
wins with the low level features. Other ones that were a biotch
to get on a good roll were the actionbank/cash clones. Oh, and
those horrible poundstretcher/poundnote things - the ones with
the dots that lit up slowly the more you put in. (Ah the days of
walking around arcades to look how many dots were lit/how full
the pots were and sticking a few 10p's in to drop them or the jp)

If it's for the kids then you can't go far wrong with "Top Tenner" by Barcrest. I love the cool music and sound...and I'm 38. They'll love it!!!
