'The most mature' - hmmm, not sure on that one BB.

Personally I think everyone who registers should pay £1/pcm membership. What's that, £20k a month with £100 going to running of site/server costs etc and the rest going to AA or something!? Who in their right mind could argue with that, non-profit making etc!?!?

The layouts / roms are available here in a managed and controlled fashion. People will always share via p2p, bit torrent etc, and no one can stop that. But to download the files without the intro, author's notes, wip thread etc is only half the story for me.

Madman - 2 points mate:
If you use some punctuation your posts become much easier to read.

Secondly, no-one's claiming morale high ground I don't think on the (non) distrubution of their layouts. It comes down to goodwill imo. If an author doesn't want their stuff packaged in this way it would be courteous to respect that. However, they have posted the layout on the www, not the most private of distribution methods known to mankind, so another train of thought says tough titties.

Yep, the punctuation could be a lot better. Working on a pc all day i get very lazy on my own computer, because i can,t be arsed when i get home. but hey, its across eventually. I hope. LOL

There are a lot of opinions that have been aired on the thread, some positive and not so. the original question was the possibility of releasing the layouts via bittorrent. which is a viable large file transfer method...also used for streaming radio (non pirate), and soon to be used by file planet and other legal organisations.unfortunately it is also associated with piracy. but the good old http, internet has been transfering ilegal files since day dot.. i can go to a number of web sites and gain ilegal software/games ect without file sharing, granted i am not getting access to 3 gig files but none the less i can get without using file sharing programs. plus what we want to release is already here AND AVAILABLE. i can,t see the problem.even it pops its ugly head onto suprnova. they gotta register for it. and i would introduce a 5 minimum post before being able to connect to tracker..which is possible...
with a 24 hour registration wait. some of the main sites use this method to deter hit and runners.basically it stops the people who just download for the sake of it. if they want it they gotta post then wait 24 hours before they allowed on the tracker.
all docs and readmes would be posted with the torrent as well.
with the emu available here and roms from here...so LAYOUTS only.

the layouts with the roms are useless.....is that a better solution....

Well, Ive been sent to his thread, by a Moderator for a look, and after reading, thought It worth a comment.

I have been dealing with torrent for years.

Torrent, whilst being P2P, due to Its very nature, NO files are actually kept on the main servers.

The files are actually on the Individual machines all over the world.

The only thing the server carries, Is the torrent file Itself, which Is not copyright, and Is NOT Illegal. Its Is simply a "pointer'. A bus conductor If you like.

So, If some company wanted to bust you, they would have a pretty hard job of doing so, and chances are, due to different laws In different countries.........NONE.

Anyway, the torrent site I hang at, deals with everything. The big N, the Big S, you name It. They are currently serving torrents for almost all roms available, Including Fruit Machine

Anyone who Is still unsure about the safety of torrenting, well, I hope this eases your mind a little. The Servers carry no Illegal files, so Barcrest, and others, can suck eggs.

A good read Is to be had on The Pirate Bay. Ive spent a few hours reading their replies to companies asking them to remove files from their server, when In fact, they dont have any.

Also, as far as updating, there Is a program called torrentzip, which will allow updating to be done very easily, without having to re download Mbs of useless data. We use this for updating of the Mame Romsets, and It can be used for basically any platform.

I am currently downloading the full Bestest 2005 Collection of Fruit Machine.

It stands at 7.19Gb. Should have It In a day or so.

Anyway, many people think torrent Is a big hairy beast. It Isnt.

Its actually a very useful tool, and I would highly suggest Utorrent as a client.

Cheers

Oh, one other thing.

People who collect Roms, would want CLEAN romsets.

Personally, I think all the user created stuff, would be removed from any torrent, and only clean romsets would be offerred.

I think all the budding artists, and their work, Is pretty safe.

Leastways, All art Is removed from any romsets I have, and any I have seen

Cheers

O.K. I have read through this thread with great interest, and have come to this conclusion. There would be no point of producing a torrent of all the fruit machines avaible. As quoted earler there would be no point as you can not pick and choose the ones you like, so end up with 4 to 5 gb of fruit machines that never gets used so would be a total waste of peeps space. I only download what machines i actually like and would like to keep it that way. And no before anyone askes i am not anti-torrent as i do use it but only for things i find usefull. I do not find 4-5 gb of fruit machines usefull.

The simple fact is that while sharing layouts and ROMs via BitTorrent may have no implications for whoever started sharing it, I don't think the manufacturers (Barcrest, JPM, BFM, BWB (probably now Vivid), MDM, Maygay (now Barcrest)) would appreciate their intellectual property rights being abused on a well known 'underground' P2P protocol.

As such, it could (and I know it may well not do, but that is beside the point) have a negative impact on the 'overground' Fruit Machine Emulation communities. As it stands - the manufacturers know that we operate on *this* level, where everything is kept in the open.

Also, several layout authors have actively made it clear that they do not want their work to be shared over a P2P protocol, either BitTorrent or otherwise.

Basically, anyone considering shoving FME stuff on, for example, BitTorrent, shouldn't bother.
