with a laptop they do pick up alot of dust and block the vents.thats what can cause them to overheat.

I goto Novatech for all my pc parts etc.
My pc I got through local add paper-paid £120.Needed a clean up and new drives-but only added £30,which was a bargin :jiggy:
The computer guy said my pc was worth £300-£400.Not that im selling lol
I invested in a new monitor from Novatech, set me back £90 but it is 22"-plays all the slots without a prob(And is only reason I purchased it!!)
If you got £400 then shop around, but dont just go for brand new as you may spy a bargin in your local paper.
I did have a laptop but it was too heavy to cart around and I couldnt play some slots on it,so I sold it and got a netbook.
True no slots to play on that! But its handy when away from home.

Yeah deffo test for dust, it can make it very slow and hot due to the dust getting trapped behind the fan. I would take the back off have a look and see what it's like. My pc started smoking one day so I sent him off to the quit smoking NHS shop :p

you should get at least 7 years out of a decent laptop these days. if fan dies then be sure to use a cooling tray always on a flat surface otherwise it will cut off if it gets too hot. this isnt fauilty its just the CPU if it reaches a certain temp it shuts down itself to prevent burn.

Not 100% sure what you mean by "put the air line up it vent holes" but if you're on about blowing air into it or using a hoover to suck out the dust then I'd advise against as it can cause the internal fans to spin for too fast and break them which is expensive and fiddly to fix...

If you're confident enough to take it apart, then you should be able to manually clean off the fans and surrounding filters. If not, it's worth finding a decent repair place that can do that for you for about £30.

On another note, I had one in the lab the other day and that had a bit of carpet stuck in it! Turned out the end user had been running it on the floor in their living room and it had sucked up the shagpile in through the vents :).

This is the one I not long back picked up

http://direct.tesco....R.210-7600.aspx

Got it from Argos (I also paid more), great all rounder, good enough for most stuff, also pretty dam fast transcoding audio files with DB Poweramp.

Also does not sound like a sodding jet engine, when you give the processor a thrashing.
