Well with the recent news that Maygay / Extreme / Impulse are being wound down, and machine production ending, hopefully someone will work on emulating their 'dead' tech.

Where did you get that news from? I understand that Maygay split up their design and manufacturing, but didn't realise that they were 'winding down'?

Anyway, just confirm - do LeisureLink actually own Maygay now?

I doubt emulation of these techs would even be considered for at least 3 years and even then, as long as theres still techs that are many many years past their sell-by date that need emulating, I'd say all these recently defunct techs will remain unemulated for a very very long time.

No, don't expect anything to be emualated, be greatful when it is.

Anyway, I don't think that EPOCH is the sort of tech people will be falling over each other to emulate. A couple of nice Impulse machines, GridRunner, The Simpsons machines, and that sort of stuff, but nothing else really sticks out for me.

Can't wait for System 5 and stuff to be emulated though :)

Heres a question - with Maygay/Impulse/Global now under Barcrest/IGT, and no JPM/Ace/Crystal likely to compete, Barcrest will have the monopoly of the machine market - surely thats FAR more important than the emulation issue?

Barcrest will not have a Monopoly, thats a BFM machine ;)

Seriously though BFM(G)/QPS/Mazooma are right up there at the top, Barcrest won't have a monopoly in the market. Despite what has been said previously I doubt this is the last we have seen of JPM in the AWP market either, bearing in mind the announcement of withdrawal was made when they were under previous management.

You won't believe this, but I totally forgot about BFM :D

Depsite the fact that they are the only bloody machines in any pubs around me :)

One thing I have noticed [although this may be purely conincidence] is there is a FLOOD of JPM/Ace machines from 2003ish [Red Hot Chilli Stepper, Hip Hopper e.t.c] on eBay at the mo. Although they may be from one supplier, do you think suppliers might be getting worried about JPM possibly going under, or something else similarly bad ?

I think Global still uses Epoch. If so then it's still latest technology!

I would guess that with the production of EPOCH based machines from Impulse, Maygay and Extreme stopping, Global would either not be allowed access to that tech anymore, or would be winding down production on those platforms as well. I wonder what they will do?

They would probably use the Pluto 6 tech, or MPU5. They could also resurrect the good old Stealth tech.

I doubt it would be a major problem for them.

Hmmm, saw another post over at FF, something about Impulse / Maygay / Extreme being trialled in January 2005 on the MPU5 tech, so I guess Global will move onto that aswell...

...in which case, what will happen to Empire - or will they work on Impact - if JPM still exists...

It's all to complex at the moment...well, after 6 pints of Guinness most stuff is pretty hard to comprehend...:S

barcrest will be using the mpu5 in the new horizon cabnet as replacement for the maygay epoch and eclipse system and platium cabnet as of late jan early feb when LLink finally let go of the spare depot as this is the last part of what LLink will be holding upuntill then as i have been told by gaybar sorry maygay bfm have global games in line with channel one games (swp`s) and the voodoo games brans

sega will be pulling the plug if the linear fails as the electronic coinmech did to ace over an nuber of years ago and pulsar cabnet has done to jpm thats why jpm scraped impact in awp`s and use the pluto system and have use old electra cabnets and old impact pcb`s in club machine only jpm`s linear awp with the pluto 6 system only not impact not any more

bfm group, electro coin ect seem to be ok

Just to steer things back towards the original topic... I`m curious about the current legal & technical situation with regard to emulation and what exactly is fair game for emulators? I`m new to all this and have only really been playing fruit machines for 5 years so alot of the oldies don`t hold the same appeal. Still good though! I see that there appears to be some sort of agreement with manufacturers regarding how long a machine has been out and a special hands off from Empire. Personally I think it should all be fair game since the manufacturers seem to have no problem with cheating the punters (ref. Fair play campaign), preying on the young and intoxicated (most machines in arcades or pubs), and creating a substantial number of addicts in this country. On the technology side I`ve never saw a system yet that can`t be broke- just look at the Games industry- every copy protection system ever made has been broken sooner or later. They`re even copying GBA carts! So just what exactly is the situation then, and what are other peoples thoughts on this?

1. Global do indeed have a contract with LL to manufacture their machines using Epoch until the end of 2005, that contract will apparently be mainly fulfilled, though expect them to get a contract with BFM using Scorpion 4 and 5.
2. Maygay/Impulse/Extreme machines will be released by the various Barcrest brands in the pretty near future.
3. If you where to only emulate Maygay/Impulse/Extreme machines, surely you can get away with emulating Epoch. All their machines code and rights etc is now owned by Barcrest Group. So long as no one emulated recent Globals, sure you could get away with it.

With respect to the bottom point, I reckon they could get away with it, but then it is a couple of coders putting time and effort into something they don't get paid for :) - As said before, it was mentioned that EPOCH could be featured in MFME 3, but if anyone wants to have a crack at it before then be my guest :D
