From what i can see , all the Acer Aspire one netbooks should have Windows 7 starter edition on them , unless its a fairly old model.
If it is fairly old XP would be fine on it , even if it was a newer one XP would run perfectly ok on it.
Has he deleted all the partitions on the HD and made it the 1 C drive , when you buy a machine with the OS already installed it should have a recovery partition on the drive , usually A:/Recovery .
If he has deleted this then that is a poor show..you can check this by going into disk managment , right click my computer > manage > under storage , you will see disk managment.

Hmmm , may have been Vista that was on it then or poss Win7 , if you can find out the exact model number you should be able to check it.
With Acer machines sometimes the hardware they put in thier machines can cause driver issues and BSODS when a different OS is installed , i know this through experience.

Yeah torrents usually are the way to go with things like this .. but if you get into downloading torrents .. its a whole new world your opening up.
It took me weeks to suss out how to use them properly , ermmm so a mate told me..not that id do anything illegal you understand.
Because linux is open source and free to download and use , i thought a direct download link would be better.
