I have Noticed of late that Fruit-emu is getting slower and slower on loading.....anyone else having this problem or is it due to the fact i am now living in the middle of nowhere....and my Oil fired net connection is seriously stuffed.........

I haven't really noticed any slow down. It should be faster than it used to be because of the theme change.

It was nanoseconds when we were on the old server which was a turbo nutter bollocks dual penty xeon mother. However times are hard so I had to downgrade the site to a single processor server. What with the number of members and size of the database the PHP/SQL stuff does take a second or sometimes two to create the pages.

It should only be the front page which takes a couple of seconds. Once you're in the forums its much quicker.

Yeh, I'm struggling too with this site.

I timed it (saddo :-p )

took 1 min 55 seconds to load :(

Theres just too much on here for my crappy laptop on dial up to cope with!

Ahhh....reminds me of the old 3Dmark01 bench posts at some of the old O/C forums :)

Anyway, heres mine. On a 576kbit ADSL, downloading an average of about 59kb/s, and a claimed loading time of about 3/4 of a second. In reality, its more like 4 seconds IMHO, but then I am downloading pretty chunky stuff... the diagonal bar background appears instantly but the actual body takes anything between 4 secs and about a minute [under really heavy downloading] to appear.

Anyway, heres a controversial idea. You have 24000 members. Very few are active. How about weeding some out?! Just have like a thing on the homepage saying something like 'Users who have been inactive for the past 60 days and have either A) Not donated to the upkeep or B) Actively contributed to Fruit-Emu.com will have their accounts deleted as of **such and such date**'.

I know that may sound like a bastardy thing to do, but bear in mind Hotmail gives you about 60 days. If you aren't paying, or are not donating in any other way, why should they be able to slow up your/our database?!! *-*-*-*-*-*1

Feel free to call me a heartless motherlover [under 18 version], but it'll be inevitable. You only have to look at the memberlist, where about 200 members have posted out of 24000. Just weeding out say 5000 of those would have a reasonable impact on performance.

How about charging people £1 per year for membership? Anything that could ease the strain on the site or allow you to go back to a Dual Xeon setup would be good, and £1 a year is hardly a big outlay for the stuff on offer - or would that be classed as charging for copyrighted ROMs?

It's such a legal/technical minefield these days :(

BarcrestBenito

*-*-*-*-*-*-*1 - Just realised, maybe it is my posting of shite that slows the forum down? If I am to blame, I am very very sorry :(

page downloads no real problem....even with Vision express rendering 2 avis and emule downloading 10 dvd rips at 256kb download and power sharing at 128kb upload...seems to be only the front end......forums are generating at 0.000042 sec's per page... my Msi E7210 based system is hardly breaking a sweat.......just notice things when they change for the better or worse.....

Well you'll all be pleased to know that having nothing better to do at 1.30am in the morning I have sat and manually run every database query on the front page of the site.

I have found that the forum centre block is taking a whopping 2 seconds to do it's SQL queries. If I hide it the front page loads in 0.5 secs if I show it, the front page can take anything up to 3 seconds to appear.

I'm going to do some further work to find out exactly which query is taking all that time.

I've also installed Turck MMCache and Zend Opitmizer on the server to cache PHP pages so by tomorrow you may see a noticeable speed improvement for the front page. All the other pages load in less than half a second anyway.

All sorted out now. The 2 second delay was all due to the text at the bottom of the forum block that was counting the number of topic, posts, replies and views. Now removed --->

[ Script generation time: 0.5889s (PHP: 74% - SQL: 26%) ] - [ SQL queries: 235 ] - [ Pages served in past 5 minutes : 23 ] - [ GZIP disabled ] - [ Debug off ]

...and thanks RB for bringing this to my attention.

Speed increase is noticeable......at 3.12am page generation time was :-
0.004 on the home page... 0.05 on the forums.....0.45 answering a thread with a few of BB's long arsed rantings... ;)

Fruit-Emu doesn't seem any slower for me. 56k, SW London.

[ Script generation time: 0.5741s (PHP: 80% - SQL: 20%) ] - [ SQL queries: 172 ] - [ Pages served in past 5 minutes : 74 ] - [ GZIP disabled ] - [ Debug off ]

Isn't enabling GZip meant to increase page loading times? :?
