OK Guitar, if you do get this to work on a normal laptop let me know, I'm not going to buy a graphics card just for Amber though. If there is a way around please let us (at least 30 to 40 % of the member's).
Like to say thanks to RobinHood (RH) for spending time trying to get this going yesterday. Really appriciated as you didn't have to go out of your way to try (as it took some time). Thanks RH.
So if you have a old Vista laptop and not got a graphics card (not needed as PS3 for gaming) you will unlikely get Amber running - Is that right?

You do know I was taking the p*ss when I said it would play DOND? MAME has made some very recent steps towards emulating it, but amber is MPU4 only.

Sort of right, except gfx cards arent just for gaming, they take load off the cpu. The big expensive ones are for gaming. They make £30 cards for a reason, and that reason is it will still speed up a business machine vastly. Allowing the cpu to do processing and the gpu to do gfx, as opposed to the cpu taking the load and co processing with an intel gfx controller.
I may be able to fix it yet, we'll see. I have a vista laptp sat next to me as i type with an intel gfx chip. I will test it later on.
At the moment I am working on other bug fixes to allow some layouts to go out.

Right, brief information here about how I got Amber to work if it is complaining about a graphics error.
I have Intel graphics, and have got it working, this may work for others too...
I don't recommend trying this if you are a computer novice as you could end up breaking your system, however, if you aren't too bad on computers, it's worth a shot!
You will need to download virtualbox from http://virtualbox.org and install it.
You will also need a copy of Windows XP.
Basically you have to install VirtualBox, fire it up, then click "New" to create a new virtual machine.
Put your Windows XP disk into the cd drive and then click "Start" to start up your virtual machine.
Go through the installation for XP, this can take a while.
Once XP is installed, boot it into safe mode (F8 as you power the virtual machine on), and install VirtualBox Guest Additions by clicking "Devices" then "Install Guest Additions"
When you are going through the wizard, you need to make sure "Direct 3D support" is checked.
Once that has installed, allow it to reboot the virtual machine, then shut it down (Start, shut down)
Back to the main virtualbox window, pick your virtual machine and click settings, then down the left, select "Display"
Under "Extended Features" put a check in the box labelled "Enable 3D Acceleration"
Click start to fire up the virtual machine again and install Project Amber, it should now be able to start and detect your graphics card as an NVIDIA chipset.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL, if this baffles you then I don't recommend trying it.
I'm not sure how layouts/roms run in it, as there aren't any available yet, but it does run
Any questions, feel free to ask here or PM me, if a mod wants to split this into it's own topic then please do.

Firstly, genuine thanks for taking the time to post and suggest help.
I think the above will be beyond most users of this forum though, it's certainly well beyond me!

Well, I have installed the latest beta version released of the Amber emulator, and also I have put the new layout in the correct folders that Ploggy has released (Blues Boys)
I have followed the instructions, on how to install, carefully, and haven’t found any issues at all.
I know a few of you are having low-quality graphic card issues that may be causing you problems, but to a few of the others, who cannot be bothered to read the instructions given to run the emulator, and read the other posts, where help has been given… then think of this - I have Alzheimer’s disease and I have done very easily...
Please, all those who want it doing for them, read the instructions, take your time, read the updates on other posts and more or less stop keep asking everyone to wipe your arses for you! It can be done, as a vast majority have proven on here, and even I have done it… so just give it a go!
Excellent work Guitar… thank you very much for the release, and once again, Ploggy hats off to you on a brilliant, first DX for the new emulator.

Norton's SONNAR scanner flagged this as suspect activity (Probs due to the prog wanting to drop a dll file in to the windows dir), but in any case, Virus Total has basically cleared the installer as safe to use.
Keep getting a error 14 relating to digital sound unable to start, so any ideas on this?
Currently using win7 64 bit (May try a re-install, but with 32bit), with a Realtek HD sound chip.

I don't mind walking people through it one to one, but you will need to download virtualbox and have a windows xp disk (or download) handy

Put a fake name/password in the box, tick offline, should sort it for you. Either that or make sure you rerun the installer as admin.
