A huge thunderstorm came rolling in over Bowling Green KY on July 2nd 2012, in a 30 minute time span we had over 3,000 lightning strikes and 6" of rain fall. Scary for the most part, but wonderful to watch, every lightning strike that lit the darkened skies up was of various colours, greens, yellows and purples. The wind was whipping around hitting 80mph, trees being snapped like toothpicks and the thunderclaps was booming so loud that our house shook with every boom, do the math, 3,000 shakes, no wonder my 5 year old boy and 6 year old girl was scared out there wits. But like most storms, they come and go, it lasted for about 45 minutes, in the meantime i had the PC turned off to be safe. The skies cleared, sun came out and unlike the UK, over here after a thunderstorm it gets very humid so the temperature is still in the 90's so it was muggy as hell, steam rising from the ground as the sun started to dry the wet roads made it even more unbearable to be outside. The local weather channel still booming over the airwaves telling us that it has passed, woohoo, i switched the PC back on, and started supper for the kids, just got their food on the table and i sat down on the couch, the local weather channel cut into the evening news program to warn us about another severe round of storms that are popping up, but alas too late, a streak of lightning smacked into the side of the house and blew my PC and wifi extender box up, the kids where knocked to the ground as was i with the force of the hit, thankfully no one got hurt except my newely rebuilt gaming machine (R.I.P) and wifi extender box (need to buy a new one). Running an old PC now till i can afford a new one. I am not a god loving person like every american around where i live, but i am thankful that me and the kids emerged unscathed.

That sounds very frightening, especially for the children... and very expensive too!

Glad you are all OK though mate - storms don't bother me in the slightest, but I bet up close and personal like that might just change my mind! ;) lol

Effin ell man , as much as i love the thunder n lightning , that sounds a bit too extreme to me.

I always say id love to live somewhere like Texas where they get supercells and tornado's but in thinking about it..i wouldnt really.

Thunder n lightning is amazing to watch and my favourite kind of weather..but watching from a distance.
Mmmmmm...Sandy ive 'ad her ye know. :)

Sounds scarey as that mate, least your all okay :)

Back in may 2010 I woke up about 2:45am to a lighting storm (no rain no wind) went on until 6 in the morning, strike after strike after strike, beautiful to watch, my dad was stood on the porch (we live in a farm house) theres 4 telegraph poles across our field just as my dad and the dog went outside all the hairs on my arms stood on end and a massive CG hit the telegraph pole about 50 yards away, I didnt see it with my own eyes, my dad just froze aswell as the dog which we had to pick up as he wouldnt move, took about an hour for him to seem okay again, Two TVs and a freeview box fried, aswell as a router, all the phones dead and all the electric off for miles.

Couple of miles down the road lightning had taken tarmac up and blown about 10 chimneys off!

Thanks all, yeah i love storms too, but that day was especially evil, and to think, back on April the 2nd of this year, there was a huge tornadic storm coming over the top of us, even though i live in part of tornado alley, we rarely get them, but that day was exceptional, 4 tornado's touched down about 10 miles from my house and a cell went overhead before it hit the ground. All in told i am used to the storms here, been here since 2001, a lot of fun, but really July 2nd was wilder than usual. To top it of, thursday 19th July 2012, we was smacked by another severe thunderstorm with winds hitting 80mph, the house around the corner from me was wrecked by a tree falling on it, no-one home at the time, tree limbs all over my back and front yard, and no power from 8:30pm till 1:30am. This is the storm rolling in on Thursday Posted Image

although very scary and dangerous, that picture looks awesome, my all-time wish is to visit tornado alley and with professional guidance chase a storm or two

Oh boy, we are going to go under another severe thunderstorm like the one we had on Thursday 19th July 2012. Base temps are going to be hot today with a cold front coming in later this afternoon which will spark the storms. As i type this it's 7:35am and it's 81f (27c) rising to 98f (37c) by midday with the heat index between 105f - 110f (41c - 43c). A SSW blowing in at 7mph is going to cause the cold front winds to whip around because of the heat, more 80mph winds forecast, but unlike Thursday, we can actually get Tornados with this storm, local weather channel on alert all day.

Lol, after all the hype that the weather channel did with this impending storm, all we got was some rain and a few rumbles of thunder. All is well, but i suppose it's better to be safe than sorry, they warned us of this storm and nothing happened unlike what Michael Fish did back in to 90's when he told the entire UK, "Don't worry, mainland UK will not be hit with this hurricane" and it was.
