Punter’s
£7m fire
after he
lost £200

By GUY PATRICK

A GAMBLER burnt
down a motorway service
station after losing £200
on a slot machine there.
Jason New, 31, caused
damage worth £7MILLION
when he tried to burn a
hole in the fruit machine
to retrieve his money, a
court heard yesterday.
His fury started a fire
which spread through
shops and restaurants at
Birch Services on the
M62 near Rochdale,
Greater Manchester.
Motorists and guests at
a nearby Travelodge inn
had to be evacuated -
but no one was injured.
Yesterday New, of
Blackpool, Lancs, was
due to face sentence for
arson - but the case was
adjourned for reports.
Manchester Crown
Court heard that the
blaze happened in Octo-
ber last year after New
and two pals had gone to
the services to play its
fruit machines.
New became “aggrieved
and angry” when he lost
the £200. More than 70
firemen were needed to
put out the blaze.
He admitted arson and
Judge Jonathan Geake
told him: “This was an
extremely serious fire
and you can expect a cus-
todial sentence.”
