I have just bought a machine which was a favourite from years gone by and am trying to get it working properly. It's the Barcrest Each Way Shifter (MPU4) the same as in the picture below.

It wasn't working at all when I got it but thankfully it was a simple fix to get it in a playable/testable state although there is still a problem.

The main feature of the game (EMU by Ploggy available to download on this site) is that while spinning the reels you also win 'shifts' then use these shifts to move an illuminated letter on one or more of the 3 lines on the upper half of the machine try to spell the word WIN vertically using the 6 arrow buttons.

The problem is that the buttons won't move the illumanated letters. 2 of the buttons do nothing and the other 4 when pressed cause various lights on the machine to light up (which go out as soon as the buttons are released.)

At this point I need to point out that I am not a tech and know virtually nothing about this subject or electronics (I just love playing fruit machines!) so please forgive the simplistic terms I may use.

Here is what I've tried so far:

Tested the microswitches - all ok.
Checked the wiring from the swithes to the MPU4 - all ok.
Removed the battery (which had started to leak) and cleaned up the PCB - all looked good but the issue remained.
Tried a different MPU4 - same issue.
Tried another different MPU4 - same issue
Tried another game card along with it's own EPROMs - obviously I couldn't play the game but still had the same issue when the buttons were pressed

So what's left?

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestions Mr Santa, will try those next. When you say a naff diode in one of the lamp holders, do you mean one specifically around that area or just one somewhere?

Thanks again,

Greg
