Hey all,

I got a letter yesterday from wonga.com saying that I owe them £540, but I have never even used Wonga or any other lending service.

I quickly phoned them up, stating that I have never used Wonga.com and that I don't owe this money. They have opened a case up but will be getting back to me either Monday or Tuesday!

Has anyone else had this before? And do you know how this process works, as I presume that they will track down the card holders address! I thought the card holders address had to match when entering this information, or could it be an error??

I'm certainly not impressed!

Get your arse on to Consumer Action Group's website, as it sounds like your ID may have been lifted etc, and they can tell you what you need to do.

DO NOT under any circumstances, give wonga.com any bank account or sort codes, or give them any card information.

Also inform all your bank's and credit cards over what has happened, and alert them to possible fraud.

Get yourself onto Noddle :

https://www.noddle.co.uk/

It's the only FREE credit report, but having been the victim of credit fraud / ID theft myself, I can assure you it's as accurate as the other big names.

I warn you though - I've given up trying to get some of the frauds removed from my file. It is such a pain in the f**king arse, I've been waiting 67 days for a reply from one of the debt collection agencies, acting on behalf of Littlewoods (who I never used, but apparently ordered £300 of ladies clothes from, using my name but with the title Ms). They claim to have contacted Littlewoods and say they are waiting for a reply - 67 days?

First they had my address wrong - they had it as a town 10 miles down the road. So I contacted Experian, Equifax, and CallCredit. They all said they would contact Littlewoods (Shop Direct Group), advise them of the fraud, and get it removed from my files.

What actually happened? They changed the debt to MY address. Thanks a F**KING BUNCH.

So I then wrote them all letters again, telling them thanks for that, but the issue they all skipped over was the fact I'd never shopped with Littlewoods, never lived in (or even heard of) the other address, and that it was clearly fraudulent.

They've said it's up to me to provide evidence that I didn't live in Stamford on the date shown. That means I need a bill from a certain date in January 2007 with my home address on. Sounds easy - but I was living with the parents at the time, and had f**k all bills. In their eyes then - I couldn't prove I didn't live 10 miles down the road, so I must be guilty.

You are completely stuck, you are basically treated as guilty, and they won't remove it. I'm just resigned to the fact that I can't get credit from anyone now (not a joke - nobody will touch me despite my previously perfect record), not even a store card.

problem is they make it too easy to give the money out quote "just one click away and the monies in your account within 10minutes or less" easy for the consumer easier for the fraudster, just like overdrafts very hard if not harder to wipe it out, i had a £500 overdraft from santander charges went upto £20 a month (£1 a day) took 5years to clear so must take an eternity or never to clear off these loan sharks, also what pee,s me off is the t,v programmes being sponsered by them i.e Red or Black sponsored by Wonga disgusting in my eyes. i think all gambling including lottery, loan shark sites should never be allowed to "sponsor" any program or even advertise on t.v or at least after the 9p.m watershed not on corrie, emmerdale jeremy kyle to name but a few, they banned alcohol n fags from sponsoring so its about time they did this for gambling, money lending etc

Thank you for all your replies and and concerns. I shall look at the site when I get home tonight

If I have become a victim of Fraud, do they not track down the card holder that the money had gone to?? As the money has gone somewhere, that way they can find who's done it??

Hopefully! I'm sure it'll work out for you anyway, in my case I didn't find out until years after, but if you've found out quite soon after the fraud it should help. Probably best to write Wonga a letter, but I'm no expert in this! :)

I've got very little to say about a company that charges 4214% APR. It's basically legal loan sharking, but for small amounts over a short period. Shouldn't be allowed in my view, but it's foolishness on the consumer's part that has allowed them to flourish.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Hi Taylor

You can get a free copy of your credit report from Credit Expert.
Join them online for a 30 day free trial.Takes around 5working days to arrive in post, just remember to cancel your membership before the 30 days is up!
Defo sounds like ID fraud.
The huge problem we all face is this, many of the companies we trust with our Id-Such as mobile providers, satelite providers and utility companis are regularly selling are personal information to other companies! It as been known that card details have been sold too. :err:
My strong advice Taylor would be to contact your bank, check to see if your bank cards have been compromised. If they suspect fraud ,they will stop them and issue you with new ones,
And I agree with all responces over Payday loan companies, they are vile vultures. They prey on the vunerable and once you are in their vicious circle, the once small debt becomes ahuge ammount of money.

The thing is, my card hasn't been involved, its just my postal information. I suspect someone has used my address details, on their card to get money but not paid back making wonga post me...

I don't think my card information has been tampered with, just some of my details.

I agree, it's unlikely your bank details were involved, because you didn't receive payment from Wonga. Makes me laugh, I thought Wonga was supposed to be better regulated?!

In any case, use Noddle :D

You can use Credit Expert from Experian as pointed out above - but you have to sign up and if you forget to cancel (or are unable to) it is £14.99 per month. Much better go with Noddle which is 100% and doesn't involve a subscription. Besides, despite the fraud against my name, Experian give me an 'excellent' score. Noddle gives a much more accurate reflection - 1 out of 5 :D LOL

When I got 'defrauded', it f**ked up my existing credit (my rates shot up because I suddenly became a higher risk) and caused years of crap. Even if you don't see it as being a problem, you want to get these things removed from your file as soon as possible, or before you know it, your existing credit (if any) will be buggered, you may find your limits dropping and rates going up like me - and don't expect any lenders to touch you until it's resolved :)

All you can view on a credit report is the information held, not how the score is actually worked out.

However, if you click 'My Credit Report' at the top, and then 'Financial Account Information' at the left, you can see all the open accounts they have on file for you.

I've attached a picture of mine, I've blanked out any personal information, but I've highlighted the fraudulent account, the other two are debit accounts with overdrafts (overdrafts not used) and one is a contract phone, which is up to date and I've never missed a payment on.

Credit card has not had a missed payment, the ONLY reason I have a 1/5 is the fraudulent transaction. Because my details were used from another address, it gets flagged up as me moving away without making good on payments - so basically, credit agencies now tell anyone I try to get credit from that I will not pay, and will move house :S

Many thanks for this Stan...

I have been on, but no one has the same issue as me. In fact they're worse, as Wonga have been taking money out of peoples accounts, and have nothing to do with them!! I seriously can not believe that that can happen... Anyway, I shall start a thread on that site, and see what they say. It seems that I may need to bring this to trading standards, etc, as they seem to be in trouble with them!! They really need to sort themselves out by the looks of it, but seems people in a worse scenario than I am... Never the less, shall follow it up the same way!!

Quite possibly as I go in to my overdraft ALL the time... sometimes over my limit... probably the reason why I have 3... I dont see the point in an overdraft (which is free) as i treat it as my money, if you get me... as if the limit = £0 on an non overdraft account

So, does the Wonga turn up on your credit report? :)

Phew. Perhaps they are just 'fishing' for info then? Perhaps someone with the same name has defaulted and they've just gone through the phonebook?

Sounds daft, but it's how debt recovery works. Find a close enough match, pin it on them, and hope they cough up :o
