Hi To All

 

I have a Mario Kart 64 Fruit machine, Been fine for a year and last knight when I turned it on it seemed to make an hissing noise from the speakers and then when it was runinng the lights on the machine seemed dullar than normal...After it had been on for around 2 hours it through up a 6.0 Gen Meter Err and the alarm was going off..As I know nothing about these any help would be great.Thanks in advance

Weak PSU and a fault meter

First thing to check on this machine as I believe it's Epoch based, is to check the mainboard where the ROM's plug in, and check to see if the small green battery on the board has not leaked in any way.

Battery will look like this.....

If it shows any signs of leakage at all, REMOVE IT ASAP (Snip it off the board if you have to), and report back here.

You are right Stanmarsh, i reckon the battery has leaked on the mpu and will require changing for a working unit.

Epoch's are reknown for it, 90% main mpu, 5% lamp board, 5% psu.....

Thanks for advice, First thing is I dont want this to cause arguments on the forum, I have looked at the machine, When turned on the reels spin,still makes a loud hissing noise from the speakers and the alarm sounds.

 

The power supply underneath has all green lights on, The board with the battery, which seems to look ok ( no leaked ) has a green light flasing called secruity,and one light not on that states vdisp, Also a flashing green light on the bord with the percentage key and 1 flashing green light on the board at the back about half way down..I have no machine knowhow and if push comes to shove any ideas on where to sell as spares or repairs as ebay wont.Thanks

Least that is good to know the battery has not eaten the Epoch board YET, but if you do get time at a later stage, best to fly-wire this battery off the board, as I have found out, working Epoch boards are starting to get a bit difficult to get now

 

Right, what may help here is moving the meters about, and see if the fault code changes in any way (Basically involves uncoupling the two wires on the back of two meters, and swapping them over)

Once it does, note the two meters you have moved along with the fault message you get.

 

Certainly if this machine was M1 series based, this trick often worked well for sniffing out a faulty meter, and I can not see any reason why this would not work too, assuming you have a faulty meter.

 

At least with checking this first before going on to poss replacement of the PSU, it will keep the possible cost of getting any needed replacement parts down to a minimum and not leave you out of pocket with buying parts you may not need.

Oh one other thing, if you could tell us where aprox you are located, as it maybe possible for one of us on the forums who has experience with Epoch, to give you a more hand on approach to getting this sorted.

Thanks for your respnse. Meters?What are the meters and were are they located?? I am based in mansfield nottinghamshire area...One thing that might have had an affect ( but didnt affect another slot I had for three years before selling ) My slot is located in my summer house/ poker shed..Its been quite cold and maybe dampish in there for the last couple of months...I play poker once or twice a month in there with heaters one during play and the rest of the time its cold in there...Cold damp or cold have an adverse affect??

There are typically 3 physical meters inside a machine - COINS IN, COINS OUT and REFILL. On older machines you'll hear these 'click' when you insert coins, or pay them out. Normally they work in 10p units - so if you insert a £1 coin, you might hear 10 rapid clicks from around the bottom door. The refill meter is normally visible through the top glass of the machine, and is normally somewhere near the coin-mech, but does vary from machine to machine. The other two meters are normally inside the bottom door, probably on a shelf near the cashboxes.

 

While it is possible the cold / damp have had an effect, EPOCH technology has a bit of a reputation when it comes to issues with mainboards and power supplies. I'm not very good on EPOCH so I'll leave stanmarsh / IMPACT to help you with this one, I'd assume it's the PSU (due to you mentioning dimmed lamps and buzzing noise through the speakers) however you'll get it back to working soon enough I'm sure

Right, you are in luck, as there are some members in the aera, but they are all located over at MPU Mecca.

However, if you think you can get down to Long Eaton / J25 M1 (I'm almost next door to Sawley Marina), I can most certainly help out here, as I have got an Epoch based machine I can test parts as required.

If you do decide to pop down, make sure you bring the PSU, Epoch board, and also the Lamp board (I'm not 100% sure my lamp board is working till I get this Epoch board I have ordered, so I can fully soak test the machine), but at least it will be a quick way to test all major components that can possibly give you issues.

 

As for the meters, follow what Ben has put as he's pretty much spot on.
