Hi all i know this is not fruit machine related topic but just wondered if anyone can help me with this problem with my laptop.

It is making a strange unusual loud buzzing and whirring noise coming from inside. This has been happening since about 2.00 pm today and whenever i close down the computer then switch it on again, once the desktop loads up with windows then the buzzing starts again. Is it a hard drive problem?

because no problems with files and programs run ok etc so im at a lost end as what it is  (i know nothing about computers).

Laptop is a compaq psersario cq60  (3 years old)

I will not be able to reply tonight as off out with the wife so if i dont reply to any questions please dont think i am not ignoring you. Will get back on late tonight or tomorrow.

Could be any number of things! If it's a mechanical buzzing noise, it could be an issue with the cooling fan? I've stripped many a laptop in my time (doing cheap repairs for family and friends) and you would not believe how much dust gets trapped inside the heatsink on one of these :p

If you wonder if the HDD is on it's way out, might be an idea to try something like HDTune (which is free) and there's a tab on there which lists HDD errors. I've had noisy drives before which have continued to work for years, but if it does show errors, might be an idea to back up as much as you can to an external drive :D

Failing that, if it's a definite 'speaker-like' buzzer noise, then it could be an error code from your mainboard?

WARNING!!!!! NEVER USE A VAC TO CLEAN A COMP, DUE TO STATIC DISCHARGE!!!!!

Best way, is to either get a can of compressed air and blast it through the vents (With the machine turned off), or if you feel brave enough, get a clean 1/2 inch paint brush, strip the machine down to the fan area, and give it a good clean with said brush, also at the same time look at the various components that use heat sink paste, and re-apply.

Or another idea could be the sound card/Earth if the buzzing is comming from the speakers. This normaly starts tho from the point between what the O/S is and the desktop

.._-=It`s not a problem only a challenge =-_..

Clean only, NEVER "LUBE".

The bearings used in comp equipment (Where fitted), are self lubricating, due to saftey concerns.

I know of someone within FME who fried a desktop computer using a vacuum cleaner. My advice with heatsink cleaning is always to completely strip down, re-do the thermal paste while you are at it, and that way you know (as long as you do it properly!!) it's not going to be a problem for another few years :)

If it is the fan failing, then given the price of spares, just buy a new one, normally only a couple of quid!

Yep, hence my reply earlier.

Buggered if I can remember who it was, but it was quite an expensive mistake.

You can download speedfan to check temperatures and fan speed:

http://www.filehippo...nload_speedfan/

Cleaning might be a good idea but I've never cleaned a laptop before cause I don't use them that much but my desktop gets really dusty and I can remove half a cup full of dust using cue-tips every 7 or 9 months and it really improves the fans noise and cooling a lot. I would say it is either fan or hard drive but I would be really careful if you intend to strip it down that you remember how it all goes back together again and if it is fan that's dying you shouldn't use the laptop as it will quickly overheat and potentially damage other components but you should be able to tell if it's stopped.

Makes no difference at all..... the risk being at ANY POWER / SPEED, will build up a static charge on the vac, so the first metal component it comes in to close proximity with, it will discharge, and that will be in to the laptop itself.

I don't think I still have the photos, but one of my laptops is a first generation Alienware M11x, just bought as a gaming netbook with a touchscreen keyboard - it's actually my 3rd one, I sold the first two and bought this off eBay.

I ended up getting a £75 refund from the seller as it was in shocking condition, with faulty hinges - but for what I paid, it's an acceptable little little machine and I still use it daily!

... anyway, I stripped it down fully (which was a hassle, as the previous owner, probably about 12, had buggered up the screw heads on the bottom panel), and seriously - the heatsink from the CPU and graphics card, on the FAN side (so not the side you can reach from the back of the laptop), was CAKED in dust. When I say caked, I mean there was no possible way any air could have flowed through it. It's actually very easy for this to happen on laptops, as the air intake is typically underneath (from your legs, carpet, dusty table, or wherever you use it). Stripped it down completely, gave it a good clean, fresh thermal paste (Arctic MX4) and it's been lovely ever since.

Still has a buggered hinge, but the fan is now only one when emulating (MFME does seem to push CPUs quite a bit!) or gaming, in general use it doesn't come on.

I dread to think what damage it would have done if it were left running in state state - but unfortunately, on laptops, cleaning out heatsinks simply doesn't get done. On a desktop PC you take the side off and see it, but on a laptop to get into the heatsink you often have to remove the mainboard, which can include all manner of different size screws (keyboard, palmrest, drive bays, e.t.c.).

Anyway, don't know why I'm bringing that up. I'd love to suggest everyone take theirs apart now and give them a clean, but I'd have hundreds of users telling me I've broken their machines. If you have a nice geeky bugger like me nearby, chuck me a few beers and I'll do it :D

Heh, same rule I have here.

I normally deal with persons who are disabled or housebound in the local area, so I only charge for parts (Hence why sometimes you will see me beg for parts) unless they cost me nothing, and a good strong coffee when I return the unit.

I do get others as well, so max I charge there is £20 per unit + cost of actual parts used (Only to stop the freeloaders abusing what I do), with all repairs having ALL windows updates and system security fully updated (I normaly suggest most users to use MSE now, as it updates via Windows Update, and is good enough for general use, and is also free).

Thanks all for help offered. After working on this since 8.30 today ive given up as i cant get to the fan. I unscrewed it all and the fan is located so deep in the computer its hard to reach so i just followed pilkys advice and gave it a good blow and hoover, a good shake then more blowing followed by another good hoovering around the keyboard and underneath it and now the buzzing has stopped so it must have been a build up of dust.
